    Blue Beetle (Reyes)

Character » Blue Beetle (Reyes) appears in 672 issues.

You might have heard this news yesterday. I saw this was mentioned in the forums but this is worthy of being on the news page. Geoff Johns Tweeted a little bit of information yesterday about Jaime Reyes, the current Blue Beetle.

BLUE BEETLE NEWS from DCE!! We have a live-action test of Jaime Reyes' scarab activating his suit. It. Is. Awesome.
Blue Beetle's going to appear in most of the Brave and the Bold's this year and we're hoping to develop a live-action show. Fingers crossed!
If I can break it out of the vault, I'll bring it to SDCC. LIVE ACTION BLUE BEETLE!!

    No Caption Provided

This is why Twitter is a good thing. This is also why it's great that Geoff Johns is the Chief Creative Officer for DC Entertainment. I love how the first we hear about a live-action Blue Beetle show is through his Twitter feed.
     == TEASER ==
Now let's think about this. I'm sure people (including myself) would like to see a show based on Ted Kord but I think Jaime has a better chance of working as a television show. Immediately we have to assume this might be a Smallville type show. We have a teen that gets 'superpowers' and has to juggle his new role along with his schoolwork. There is also the fact that Jaime has already appeared on eight episodes of Batman: The Brave and the Bold. TV viewers will already know Jaime over Ted.

As much as I like the character on Brave and the Bold, I would hope this doesn't mean we'll see less of other heroes. In other words, I hope that Jaime making more appearances won't mean the reduction of other characters having a guest appearance.

With no word on when the plan is to release the show (next Fall?), we are left to speculate over what this news means. Do you think they'll go the Smallville route and tone down the spandex/comic book action? Will we see actual comic book characters/villains or will we have made up villains of the week? Will they cast an unknown actor for the role. Will other characters have guest appearances? Where will this show air? That could make a big difference in the success as well. We'll have to stay tuned in to Geoff's Twitter to see if we'll get any more updates.

I think they should make a show about a more popular hero. Smallville worked because everyone knew who Superman was. Not many of the public know about blue beetle. Maybe a character like, Flash should get his own show, or even Zatanna (supernatural shows are all the rage now)

YEAH!  This sounds great.  I love Jaime, and am sad that his series got canceled, but this sounds great.  I can see it more as an animated show, but I will totally watch this

In my opinion, I think there'd be less pressure with a minor character. If you try making a show with a high profile character, everyone will have demands over what they expect. This is one of the reason that certain people aren't crazy about Smallville. Doing a Wonder Woman show, for example, would have a lot to live up to. With someone like Jaime, they can make any necessary tweaks for television and most people would accept it. I'm not saying this is okay but just what might work easier.

@Cherry Bomb: To your Zatanna comment. Look how long Charmed was on and how well it did. I think that'd be a fitting show compared to the Blue Beetle. Plus she has made appearances on Smallville. The truth is too that her costume would sell to guys and/or girls that haven't heard of her before.

Is this gonna be done Smallville style?  If so, then this is a fifty fifty show.  Could be good could just plainly out right SUCK.  Blue Beetle to me is like D.C. version of ultimate Spiderman.  If this is gonna be like Smallville, we might be getting somewhat of an idea of what the Spiderman Reboot is gonna be like by keeping it in highschool.  Looking forward to see what his abilities are going to be tho.  Should be fun at least at first.

As much as like to see this popular young superhero and Teen Titan, I have a few concerns:
Will we see the Posse and the Reach?
Guest appearances of other DC characters: Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Booster Gold, Batman, Superman, Traci 13, Peacemaker, The Teen Titans....?

This would be cool if it does not stray to far from the original comics. (no drama queens PLEASE) But seeing how this is going to be a transforming armoured hero series, i'm afraid it will go the same way as any Tokusatsu series that tried to get a foot hold on western shores, Being labelled ''lame'' just because it look like Power Rangers and ignored because of it.

hmm... I wonder if what criteria does DC/WB use to decide who gets a TV show or not. I mean Blue Beetle is kinda cool and all (the Reyes version anyways), but does he really deserve a show? And a LIVE ACTION one?!

I guess I'd be more excited if it was an animated series. Live Action ones rarely (if ever) work out

Why not?  The more comic book related items in the media, whether its TV or movies, is great by me provided they are done well.  With Johns, let's hope he makes certain that applies.  Interesting news, curious if this will come to fruition.

I think they will go the live action Ben 10 movies rout.  With Animated parts for the Blue Beetle stuff, and maybe a costume, but real people and stuff for the rest.

It depends on who they are targeting with Blue Beetle, and this version has so far (in Brave and the Bold) been targeted towards a younger audience.  Something like the Ben 10 movies would work.
When I heard Blue Beetle, I was really hoping for a Ted Kord movie.

Totally, charmed lasted 8 years and smallvilles lasted 10. supernatural is very successful, so mixing elements of superhero and magic would definately work. i love zatanna and she deserves her own show, she has many stories to tell too! (:

A Wonder Woman show? A Flash show? Really? They have both had shows already (they need movies now lol). I really like that this time DC might do something with a property that not everyone knows. One of my biggest criticisms of DC in the past has been that they have only seemed interested in doing anything with the select few characters people already new, instead of mining the potential of newer characters (I suppose WB deserves the criticism, but still). I might actually pay attention to this since it's not just Superman again, for instance. The only way newer characters can establish themselves as major properties anyway is through exposure. If it doesn't work then ok, but at least they're trying now.
