Could A Blade Spin-Off With Stephen Dorff Work?
I was surprised when Blade came out in 1998. It wasn't your typical "Marvel" movie. I was never a real Blade fan but I really dug the movie. I hadn't really seen much of Stephen Dorff before (or since) but he did a great job as the arrogant bastard, Deacon Frost. The movie also served to make a name for director Stephen Norrington.
Norrington hasn't had huge success since Blade and back in December I reported that he was planning on re-doing a movie based on James O'Barr's The Crow. Now eleven years later, it appears that a Blade spin-off is in the work. Is the time right to return to the Blade universe?
Norrington and Dorff think so. The idea is to steer clear of Blade and focus on Stephen Dorff's character, Deacon Frost. But wait, didn't he die in Blade? Yes he did. Dorff told the UK's Sunday Mail that the spin-off would be a prequel to the Blade movies. It seems that Norrington also plans on making this a trilogy. Norrington also credits Dorff in coming up with the idea.
As badass as Dorff was as Deacon Frost, could a movie based on his story work? Also, it'd have to be a big sell in order to make a trilogy out of it. I have to wonder about when this would get started. Dorff is currently working on a Sofia Coppola movie while Norrington is working on The Crow. I don't think Dorff ages the same way that Vampires do so they need to get moving on this. I suppose make-up and/or CG could be used to make Dorff appear as he did eleven years ago.
Are you interested in a movie based on the Deacon Frost character? Would a movie about this douchey vampire work? Will anyone even remember his character after all these years?
I thought he was cool in Blade, but... I haven't been biding my time for eleven or so years Waiting UNtill THE DAY a deacon frost trilogy might come out, I don't personally see the appeal, plus a trilogy I can see them trying to make him a navie vampire into a tragic villian boohoo I'm gonna live forever :( basically a trilogy that Builds up and builds up, untill we get to Blade where he Blows up, seems kinda dumb
I kind of liked Deacon Frost in the movies, but a TRILOGY? I don't think that will go well. "Let's have a prequel trilogy of a villain who ends up getting killed in the original trilogy!" Um, no.
But heck, vampires are famous nowadays, so if they want to waste the money...go for it.
Blade I could watch over and over again that's how good this movie was. But I don't know if a Deacon Frost film would be good as the first Blade film, but then again who knows.
I wish Stephen Norrington & David Goyer's version of Ghost Rider was done, then the Mark Johnson/ Nic Cage version. The only thing that was good in that in the film was the special effects.
Wow, has it really been that long since the first Blade movie?! I have to admit, I wouldn't bother with a Deacon Frost movie. But I'm sure all the vampire loving goths would go.
Setting it up as a trilogy seems kinda ballsy to me. It's like they're saying they know it's gonna kick ass at the box office. But then, there's always straight-to-dvd...
" Ehh, I would like to see Blade vs Morbius "I think the film with Deacon would be cool. Hell I say throw Morbius in there two. In an alternate ending in the first film, Morbius is seen looking at Blade. When Blade sees him he acts shocked as if he knows him. The three vamps only truly meet once and that was during Blade's solo series.
" Blade was ok. But the effects were some of the worst ever. I'd go see it if it was done well. "When they used CGI, it was pretty damn bad (except for the vampire's dying in ash and whatnot....that looked kinda neat). I thought that the non-CGI effects (like makeup and such) looked pretty good, for the time.
" @jefprice said:the first movie came out in 1999 and had a much smaller budget." Blade was ok. "
The actor was good, but I don't know...I would buy it on DVD but a Deacon Frost movie with out Blade is kind of nothing. It would have to have a hell of a trailer and plot for me to watch it in the theater; just for it to be a prequel it already gives up the fact that no matter what he does he will die against Blade...
Maybe they should revive him instead, after all he was a "GOD" that be interesting
The one interesting thing about Deacon Frost (in the movies) is that he bit Blade's mother, turining her into a vampire and in a sense helping to give birth to Blade the Vampire Hunter. Frost uknowingly created the person that would play the biggest role in his demise and the eventual demise of an entire vampire nation. Pretty interesting but I don't believe he deserves a movie over some other villians and heroes out waiting for their shot at the big screen.
A spin-off prequel? Sure! I like the character and Mr. Dorff was great in the movie.. A trilogy though? I don't know about that.
I'd probably watch them all if they made it happen but as much as I like the character and Stephen Dorff's portrayal of him I don't think the character would hold mosts interests spanning a trilogy.
One movie would be fine and I'd happily watch it.
