gmanfromheck's Blade of the Warrior: Kshatriya #1 review

A nice change from the typical superhero comic

I've only read a few Virgin Comics.  I didn't really know much about this new mini series.  I read it and was impressed.

From the first page you get an epic feel to the story.  The art and colors really shines.   I was just staring at the third page, looking at the lightning effects in the background and had to push myself to continue reading.  The art has just the right feel for this kind of story.  It has a lot of detail but isn't done in the extreme superhero-style.  R. Manikandan's style is really something.

The story takes place in 356 B.C. but then we are told of the story of Kshatriya which takes place before the "Age of the Gods ended."  With the Gods still around, I take that as pretty much anything can go.  We see the beginnings of Kshatriya including finding out why it appears he has a tiger's arm.  We don't get to see him fully in action in this issue but I can't wait for issue two.  If the last page is any indication, the next issue is going to start off with a blast.

The villain of the story is also well done.  He's is shown to be as vile as they come.  I think a hero is defined by their villain.  You need someone really evil in order for the hero to triumph over.  Kshatriya will have his work cut out for him.

My recommendation is to pick this up if you're looking for something without spandex in it.  It has a mature feel even though it's not a "mature" comic (meaning full of explicit content).  Give the heroes in capes a rest and try something new.  Virgin knows what they're doing.  I'm looking forward to reading more from them.
