Blackest Night 8 came out this past Wednesday and a lot of changes are about to take place in the DCU. It's been one day since the book came out and DC has decided to spill the beans about which characters are once again walking among the living. As the title states above, there are MAJOR SPOILERS within this article, so if you haven't read the issue and don't want anything ruined for you, please don't click the spoiler boxes I'll have in here. So, DC posted this picture today (at the bottom of the article), revealing what seems to be major players in the Brightest Day event.

Some of these characters I've known for sometime as characters that died years ago. One of these characters I've never even heard of. Is this just a cheap stunt, or do they serve a purpose in the upcoming Brightest Day event? I'd like to believe that each one has a reason for coming back. With a few of these characters, it just seemed like they died and came back in the mini-series just for the heck of it. At the same time, did anyone really think that as all these DC characters are dying, they wouldn't come back to life by the end? I believed we'd see the vast majority return to life.

However, as much as I want to think their deaths were just filler in the book, I really do think each one in this picture will serve a greater purpose, but then the question is, who's the enemy? Are the characters that came back to life the enemy? Are members of the corps the enemy? How do all these puzzle pieces fit together? It's something we can speculate on now, but it won't be fully answered until Brightest Day finishes up.

The question always pops up, "Is death cheap in comics?" It's not a flat-out "yes" or "no" answer though. Death, at first, may seem like a cheap plot device, but depending on the writer and the story it could be something so much more. Death can unite enemies and divide friendships, sometimes it's shades of gray, and other times we won't know the answer until the story is completed.

How do you feel about the death and return of these characters?

#5 Posted by Pez85 (205 posts) - 3 years, 2 months ago - Show Bio

What was the point of bringing Boomerang back? I hope it's not just to give Tim an arch-nemisis.

#6 Posted by DEGRAAF (7280 posts) - 3 years, 2 months ago - Show Bio

do any of those people effect Tim Drake?

Im interested in Rayners situation. Also i hope WW has to kill Max Lord again

I'm super excited for Deadman, almost as much as I am for Aquaman.

Max Lord-I really don't think he should have come back but now that he is back hopefully that will end any melodrama over the fact that Diana killed him I liked his death but it did more harm then good. I see him being the villain in Generation lost.

Zoom-That makes so much sense Barry is back and now his biggest villain has returned but it almost makes his death in Rebirth pointless. Good thing he is back I see him being a bigger threat to Barry then other Rouges.

Hawk- Interesting bringing him back even after his whole villainous turn it seems Geoff Johns may be against heroes acting like bad guys so his return is probably going to be used as his redemption.

Jade-A character I don't see has any reason to come back her resurrection seems to confirm my belief that writers these days like certain characters to much to kill and don't have the heart for letting them go.

Captain Boomerang-Never felt any particular way about this fella I did think his death scene had a big emotional impact in Identity Crisis and I think when it is that well writen they should not come back. I did hate his son and I am glad that character is gone.

Ronnie Raymond-His death didn't seem to be anything huge other than making a new Firestorm that had a canceled series. I do wonder what the vibe will be with him and Jason, Gerry Conway said that what makes Firestorm work is the person who makes rash decisions is in charge of the body and the person who is smart is the brains and I wonder if that will be their case.

Martian Manhunter-I think people like him more than he is useful the character has barely done anything in the past few years with retcon and reboot after eachother I don't think he should have come back.

Aquaman-Don't care either way.

@inferiorego: The Hawks- I understand what was said in the article about some characters dying just to come back and I think that was the purpose to reboot them to maybe streamline their history.

Deadman-Interesting making the character who is dead alive. This resurrection caught my eye.

Osiris-His death was some very shocking and powerful stuff in 52 I think all is said and done with him.
No offense to fans of this book but from the first issue this series seemed a little predictable.

The potential with Deadman has me giddy. I am buying whatever book he comes in to see this story play out.

Aquaman, I like. The BN stories, the Brave and Bold issue has shown me that he's a cool character. I'll follow his story.

I'll need some bigger reasons as to why some of these guys are back, but Jade coming back is my biggest problem. I don't need some bad love triangle with her, Kyle, and Soranik Natu.

Does this mean the Hawk curse is gone? And as for Zoom....if he's alive there and alive in prison (see BN: Flash 3)....does this mean we have 2 Zooms? Although that Zoom did come back from the future after he was resurrected....but couldn't he go and see himself and...yeah, I'll stop confusing myself with this.

Only characters i'm happy about coming back is Hawkman, Hawkgirl, and Osiris. I like Osiris alot. I think the Blackest Night issue of The Power of Shazam was one of the best. I'm also kinda interested to see how Tim reacts to the man who killed his father coming back to life. And i think I'm one of the only ones who liked the female Hawk. lol

If these heroes are back alive...I wonder if all the Black Lanterns will come back too. That would be something to see.
Every...single...Black Lantern...in...the...entire...UNIVERSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I figure Hawk and Dove will end up in a relationship.

I was thinking the same thing about zoom i want to know how they are gonna fix that. alsoat teh end of Flash: BN they show zoom and reverse flash talking to each scheming, i cant wait to see reverse flash & zoom vs barry or Barry & Wally

Captain Boomerang killed his dad.
#25 Posted by RoninKane (80 posts) - 3 years, 2 months ago - Show Bio

I thought it was weird that Captain Boomerang came back as his skinny younger version, while the others came back just as they had died.
The white light gives life and a slimmer figure.
I was hoping Abin Sur would be brought back, but i'm happy with Martian Manhunter and Aquaman being back

@DEGRAAF:
I was referring to Hawkman and Hawkgirl. If they remember everything and the death door is closed, is their curse broken? Although, I do agree that Hawk and Dove will likely date.

As for Zoom, I imagine he could free Zoom/Reverse Flash...then go back in time and everything would be straight. Although the possibility of 2 Zooms is intriguing as well.

Soo pumped for Aquaman and Martian Manhunter, but not surprised.
Really surprised about Jade and Ronnie Raymond but just as excited!!
The rest I couldn't care less about. Max Lord should definitely stay dead.

Was hoping Vic Sage would be back :( ...I guess he still could be, sut not featured in the pic.

So basically Blackest Night is DC The End, so now once you die you stay dead.. until the kill off another major character just to bring them back in a year or two.

It was a surprise, because it is a HUGE change, but when you think about it...Deadman (logically) had a storyline through Blackest Night. He was in the early issues then in the Batman mini-series, the one-shot about Phantom Stranger, and then back to the main series. After I read the issue and thought about it, Johns definitely had foreshadowed Deadman playing a role in the end.

I don't think any of the characters were picked for the kinds of reasons you're thinking of, I think each of them were brought back specifically for whatever they have planned for brightest day.

I'm also really interested in Deadman being alive...though I think we may need a new moniker for him now.

Also what was with Carter Hall's hair? It's very minor but it bothers me. And I really don't know about bringing back Shiera. For the most part I liked Kendra and how she tried to rebel against being Shiera.

i soooo feel like this was a cop out, and i love the two bigger JLA'ers that returned with a masssive passion.
I just feel like tehre should have been more going on than just "Annnnnnnd thier back!" Ther hshould have been a BN: (their names here) that showed them fighting to get back (much like Superman's return journey with his father way back when), as well as possibly showing why some of them DIDNT make it back.
This was the one way i DIDNT want BN to end, with random, happy returns with no strings and no sacrifice. I'm kinda upset with geoff and DC for this...
still, im excited to see those two under appreciated JLA'ers return, and i cant wait for what happens next.

That's actually a really good read.

The Jade part makes me understand a bit more of why she was brought back.

I know everyone calls it the triology (Rebirth, Sinestro Corps War, and Blackest Night), but it really seems like it is bigger than that for Geoff with Brightest Day.
