DC announces their plans to revive some of their classic stories!

    No Caption Provided

During the Diamond Retailers Summit this week, DC made an announcement about what we can expect in Blackest Night starting this January. According to a report from IGN, the series will be skipping a January issue of Blackest Night in order to give artist Ivan Reis plenty of time to work on the final two issues in the series. Fear not, however, for you will get your fill of what has been a fantastic and riveting series!

DC will be taking fans back to the Silver Age of comics, choosing eight stories which either ended or had been canceled, and breathe new life into them once again. The issues will continue their numbering (i.e. if the issue ended at "six" it will pick up at "seven") and will be resurrected for the month of January. Each story will be featured during Blackest Night.

The following books will make their return and written by the following writers:

The Power of Shazam #48 - Eric Wallace
    Catwoman #83 - Fabian Nicieza
Suicide Squad #67 - Gail Simone & John Ostrander
The Question #37 - Greg Rucka
Phantom Stranger #42 - Peter Tomasi
Weird Western Tales #71 - Dan DiDio
Atom and Hawkman #46 - Geoff Johns
    Starman #81 - James Robinson

Each of these stories will center around an important moment in the respective character's history and continuity. For example, Catwoman's story will touch on her first encounter with Black Mask. Which of the following series are you most looking forward to? Are you disappointed that Blackest Night will skip the month of January and that these books will be released instead?

now if they took out weird western tales and perhaps put in Man of Steel that would be cool, Cause I cant get enough of Supes stories. And as much as I am loving New Krypton I will be quite happy when Superman is back in Metropolis where he belongs.

I am really excited that James robinson is writing Starman. I think (I hope) it will either be David or Ted. I could see it being "Talking With David 2010". David Knight (SPOILER ALERT: by way of Jim Corrigan) really was the window into the dead of the Golden Age and the JSA. Unless it ties more into Weird War Tales with Scalphunter and the O'dares - then it would be a Tale of Times Past. Either one would be infinitely cool. It's a shame that Jack Knight is still happily retired. (Damn it!)

I thought this was a neat announcement, and a great way to give the Blackest Night team a break and still reward the readers.

Only, like many, I wish more of the original creative teams could've been included -- Ordway on Power of Shazam, and Catwoman with Brubaker and Darwyn Cooke specifically.

And the suggestion of Man of Steel would have been great -- with Louise Simonson and Jon Bogdanove, of course!

Regardless of the numbering, are these relaunches, one-shots, mini-series? Was there any indication how long these will run?

This is nice that they are giving the artist time to work on the book, and that they are giving some canceled series a spot light. Seems appropriate as well. When you consider how Blackest Night is reviving so many of the dead. Why not revive some dead series along the ride?

This kind of reminds of of in manga sometime there will be a skipped week. Either the whole magazine isn't published that week of a single story. Often times for research or what not. Though that's normally just a week's wait. This in the whole month. Least they had the courtesy to give plenty of notice.

Is it just me or does Blackest Night seem to be ending rather abruptly? I know it's months away. Still feels like this has more life in it. (pun unintended)
