Anyone know some good Black Panther stories, or (perhaps more likely) some stories featuring him, that at least have him not playing a background role? Although T'Challa is one of my favorite characters, I haven't read as much on him as I wanted to, and with rumors that MARVEL may indeed have The Most Dangerous Man Alive lined up for an upcoming movie (and he fits the bill) I'd like to catch myself up on some stories either of him, or featuring/guest-starring him.

I'd like kind, serious responses, if possible.

    Thanks.

Essential Black Panther vol.1 just came out about a month ago. It's only 20 bucks for an insane number of pages, all in black and white, but still a brilliant deal. Any comic shop should still be able to order it if they don't already have it on-hand.

    It includes:

    1. The entirety of Don McGregor's run on Jungle Action, including the great and bizarre Panther's Rage storyline and the unfinished arc featuring T'Challa taking on the KKK and the offshoot cult, the Dragon Circle.

    2. The first 10 issues of Jack Kirby's 1977 Black Panther series, which came just a few months after the cancellation of Jungle Action.

In a nutshell, this volume includes almost every Black Panther comic from the 1970s. The Panther's Rage story is especially worth it. It went for decades without ever being collected until just a couple of years ago when they put out a really expensive Marvel Masterworks edition. Now, with the Essential volume FINALLY out, this great, nearly forgotten story is easily available to the masses without having to hunt down obscure 1970s back issues.

@Remi: @Twentyfive: Black Panther v2, written by Christopher Priest. The entire run is recommended.

Yeah, Black Panther books normally aren't that well-received. Priest is a great writer, he's just not a popular writer.

If wanting to keep up with the character, yeah. If wanting to give the writer the benefit of a doubt, absolutely not. Plus, he made a horrible attempt at trying to retcon T'Challa's history.

@Remi: He rectonned how his father was killed. I think that was one of the few things that Hudlin did well. Much of Hudlins run was O.K. conceptually but poorly executed.

Hudlin also got better as time went along, like all things it had its good and bad.

But it was more like 35% good and 65% bad.
