I agree with you. The character really need to be rethink with the original comics as source. They do not have to take everything seriously ( I think we can go without the racoon story ) and some adding of tragic in his backstory would fit even better, but for me, they should really think about what the sentence "know that the mask destroys one identity while creating another" implies for the character.
