Origin
After receiving a gold Olympic medal as a decathlete Jefferson Pierce returned to his home in Metropolis. Here he worked as a teacher.
After witnessing the violent acts of "The 100" (the local criminal organization)Jefferson donned a mask, belt and costume (made by Peter Gambi); thus giving him his electrical power and Black Lightning was born.
The belt would later be destroyed by his enemies, hoping to render him powerless, but it was discovered that they had internalized- so he no longer needed the belt. He is the father of Thunder (Anissa Pierce) from the Outsiders, and Lightning(Jenifer Pierce) of the JSA.
Powers and abilities
Black Lightning is able to generate, project, channel and absorb electrical currents. He can also generate bulletproof force fields. Jefferson Pierce was trained in the martial arts by Batman. On the cover of JLA he has been shown to go so far in his manipulation that he can transform his whole hand/wrist into pure electrcity.
