Black in Black
I love the issue and this hero. Now is does come off as a little Blaxploitation but let's not loose sight of what we have here. This book is a self-titled comic featuring a Black Superhero at a time when it was unheard off. Black Lightning is a college educated Olympic level athlete who comes back to the slums of Metropolis to do good for the community he came from. He then suffers a loss when he sees a young man who reminds him of himself killed by a gang of drug dealers. This sets him off and he becomes the Black Lightning.
Now to disguise his identity he speaks in street slang and for the 1970's that meant a lot of "Jive turkey" language. It sounds silly now but It really in no differnt than the slang of today. I'm sure when another twenty five years goes by we will look at the slang today and laugh and cringe. looking at it now however it really has a charm that seems unique. I love this book art story and all. Black Lightning is one of the best black Superheros ever in comics and the story and art is done well. If you see this book and can afford it buy it. It is a special treat. I gave it four stars.
