Several heroes and villains has been known as Black Knight, the current being Dane Whitman.
Sir Percy of Scandia
The first known Black Knight was Sir Percy of Scandia who lived during the 6th century. He was recruited by Merlin to become the Black Knight. He is the eighth Black Knight, the eight before him got corrupted by the Ebony Blade, but Percy was not. He was one of Bngudja's Knights of the Round Table and he was constantly trying to find evidence of Mordred treachery. After the fall of Camelot, Mordred and his men created a dagger from the Starstone meteorite. Mordred's men killed Sir Percy with the dagger. Merlin then cast a spell on Sir Percy's spirit so it will live on by casting a spell that will revive his ghost.
Nathan Garrett
Biologist and the direct descendant of Sir Percy, Nathan Garrett found his anceastor's tomb along with the Ebony Blade. Even though he is the descendant of Sir Percy, he is unworthy of weilding the ebony blade. Garrett left and devised an arsenal of medieval weapons and had genetic engineers create a winged horse named Aragorn. Unlike Sir Percy, he started to commit crimes. After running in with Giant Man, he joined the Masters Of Evil. With Baron Heinrich Zemo and the other Masters of Evil, they tried to defeat the Avengers and hold New York. They failed and tried to defeat the Avengers again, but they failed again. Garrett became more focused on defeating Iron Man so he kidnapped Happy Hogan and held him hostage in a Castle. Black Knight disrupted the circuitry in the Iron Man armor. Black Knight carried Iron Man up into the sky and attempted to drop Iron Man, but Iron Man managed to unhorse him and Iron Man's flight came back but Nathan Garrett fell. As Nathan was dying, he revealed his identity to Dane Whitman and told him to use the technology for good instead of evil.
Dane Whitman
Following his uncle's wishes, Dane Whitman used science for good instead of evil. He did not become the Black Knight at first, instead he used is scientific expertise to help the world. When he used magnetism to look for extraterrestial life, he accidentally brought the Brotherhood Of Evil Mutants to earth. To solve the problem he created, he became the Black Knight to find Magneto. While trying to find Magneto he ran into the Avengers who mistook him as Nathan Garrett. After relizing their mistake, he helped them get on track. He was invited to join the Masters of Evil by Crimson Cowl(Who was actually Ultron). Even though this incarnation was not evil, the Crimson Cowl was unaware of Nathan Garrett's death. Black Knight used the invitation to inflitrat the Masters of Evil's ranks. Ultron suspected Black Knights's treachery so the Masters of Evil fought and beat Black Knight. Whitman was found by Jarvis and he helped the Avengers defeat their foes. He was offered membership but he declined and went to his Uncle's Castle. There he saw Sir Percy's Ghost and was deemed worthy of the Ebony Blade. With the sword, he defeated the gaurdian of the blade and returned to America.
Whitman ran into the Avengers, as pawns in a game between Kang and Grandmaster. A battle between Whizzer and Goliath, had the Ebony Blade as the prize. Black Knight interfeared by transporting himself and the Avengers to Kang's future. They faced Kang, and Kang begged Grandmaster for the power to defeat the Avengers. Grandmaster did, but Kang was still defeated by Black Knight (because he was not an Avenger). Again he was offered membership and Black Knight accepted. After a battle between Casiolena, Executioner, Enchantress, against the Defenders, Whitman was turned to stone. Doctor Strange brought Dane to his Sanctum Sanctorum in hopes of reversing the spell. Doctor Strange, found Whitman's soul in the nameless dimention. Strange sent a message to Dane Whitman, but it was warped by Dormammu. This led Doctor Strange to believe that the Evil Eye was the way Black Knight could get his soul back. So the Defenders and the Avengers completed the evil eye. When the Evil Eye was completed, Dormammu tried to use it to destroy the universe but he was defeated before he could. It turned out that the evil eye could not help Black Knight because his soul had traveled to Twelfth Century during the time of the Crusades.
Dane Whitman's soul now inhabited the body of his ancestor, Eobar Garrington, who was also a Black Knight. He had found a mystical flying horse named Valinor. Dane/Eobar had to track down Mordred and defeat his spirit. Merlin's magic brought the Defenders to the time era and they all defeated Mordred. Black Knight decided to stay in the Twelfth Century and the Defenders returned to their original time. To protect Avalon from an attack by Fomor, Black Knight used the Evil Eye to absorb enough energy. His body was destroyed in the process. Doctor Druid used his magic to return Whitman's soul to his original body. The stone turned to flesh and Black Knight was back in the time he belonged.
Much changed during his absense and he started to feel blood thirsty. Strange found that it was the curse of the blade. They ended the curse by appealing to Sir Percy's spirit and letting the spirit live within the blade. During this time, Valinor lost his wings.
Whitman took full membership in the Avengers, he rode the atomic steed. While on the Avengers, he developed a crush on Wasp, but she did not share his feelings. After that he developed a crush on the female Rita DeMara.
Black Knight slowly became more medieval and archaic. When Marrina went under a transformation into a huge sea monster, she began to sink ships and destroying Atlantis. The Avengers hunted her down but Thor searched in Asgard to find a cure for Whitman's condition, but Asgard was under attack by Seth, the egyptian death god. Thor used the Ebony Blade to slay Seth. Thor left Black Knight in the care of Doctor Strange, who with the help of Victoria Bentley, Sean Dolan, and the spirit of Sir Percy, turned Whitman back to normal. Black Knight returned to the Avengers, without the Ebony Blade, but with a laser sword.
Whitman became a more determined and followed the field leader Black Widow. His determination made him become more ruthless, so much that he helped with the assassination of the Supreme Intellegence.Whitman even started neglecting Valinor, his squire Dolan, and his benefactor Victoria Bentley. Dolan took the Ebony Blade and Valinor and became Bloodwraith. Whitman and Victoria Bentley had started to consider a relationship when Bloodwraith killed Bentley. Black Knight defeated Bloodwraith, but Dolan got away.
During his time on the Avengers, Dane Whitman was having trouble with love. He was in love with Crystal, but he also found he was attracted to the mentally unstable Sersi. Sersi was madly in love with Dane so she forced Whitman to mentally bond with her. When Quicksilver returned, it seemed he was preparing to reconcile with Crystal. Dane quickly stated his feelings toward Crystal. Dane's Evil counterpart, Proctor, attacked and tried to kill Sersi for what she did in his Universe. Black Knight helped defeat Proctor, when Proctor was defeated, his Ebony Blade was taken int Avenger's custody. Dane resigned to accompany Sersi in her exile. During thier travels in other dimentions, Sersi became more emotionally stable. They spent time with the super team, Ultra Force. Both Sersi, and Dane Whitman eventually got back to their own earth and time. At the time the Avengers were temporarily disbanded, so he joined Heroes For Hire. He was later informed by the Lady Of The Lake that he was fated to be the Champion of Avalon. She gave Dane a new Winged Horse and new equipment.
He became an inactive member of the Avengers while he battled evil for the Heroes for Hire. On one of the final Heroes For Hire Mission, they went to Mt. Wundagore, where they found the New Men. Black Knight was chosen to stay and lead the New Men. Black Knight eventually broke free of the New Men and rejoined the Avengers. He had hoped to be near Slorenia so he could stop Bloodwraith. Unfortuatly for Dane, he joined the Avengers during the war against Kang. After the war, he left the Avengers.
More recently, he has been seen owning a museum the chronicling all the Black Knights throughout history. Merlin told Dane that he must not destroy the Ebony Blade. Dane was also asked to join the team, he accepted. He was only on the team for two adventures, then he left. He is currently believing that the Ebony Blade he has now is not the real one and he is searching for the real one.
Vatican Black Knight
This unnamed Black Knight is part of a supervillian team that invaded Wakanda. This Black Knight wants to convert Wakanda into Catholicism. He was defeated by Black Panther and Panther took the Knight's blade.
The Ebony Blade
The Black Knight wields the Ebony Blade, a sword forged by Merlin from Starstone meteorite. It has magical properties which makes it indestructible and able to cut through any substance, it can deflect or absorb magical attacks and is immune to most magical enchantments. The bearer of the Ebony Blade is immune to death as long as he holds the Blade.

Dane Whitman of Earth-374 was known as Proctor and was leader of the Gatherers.

In this reality Dane Withman was the Black Knight and he was a member of the Queen's Guard.
Earth-9997
In this reality the Black Knight is the son of Black Bolt and Medusa. He has similar powers to Black Bolt.
