Born just outside of Ft. McMurray, Alberta, Jesse grew up with a very successful but abusive father. His great grandfather was the brother of Alexander Cameron Rutherford, the first premiere of Alberta and their family was very well connected politically. His father William Forsberg Cash was a powerful man with powerful enemies and the stress of his daily life inevitably landed on the shoulders of his son. Jesse got into trouble with the law and was eventually caught up in a scandal that convinced Jesse never to return home again when it caused a backlash against his father.
The scandal involved his father's lawyer and his daughter Laura who was Jesse's childhood friend and teenage lover. Laura was a reclusive and shy girl who only ever really talked around Jesse, a brash, outgoing trouble-maker.
One night Jesse returned home to find his father drunk and angry over a missed land deal. William began beating Jesse with the wooden stick he often used but this time Jesse ran away. The police could not find him due to the huge rainstorm that struck the town. Jesse showed up at Laura's house only to witness Laura's father sexually abusing her. This was all that Jesse could stand. Even though he was only 16 he attacked and killed Laura's father and draped a black pirate flag over the body. For the next two years Laura and Jesse lived on the run and on the streets. After a couple years Laura left him to live with her mother. Jesse remained on the streets, one step ahead of the police, always looking for a fight.
He worked odd jobs if possible or stole what he needed if it was required. Even during these early years some part of him was protecting the innocent; he would often pick fights with people who bullied or abused those weaker or smaller than themselves. It was during these years that he first met Snowfall, the magician who would become his only friend.
Sometime around his 21st birthday Jesse picked a fight with a man twice his age and size. Jesse had no chance against the man and his friends and he was beaten severely, suffering fractures in all the bones in his face and skull, as well as numerous broken bones throughout his body. Jesse was ready to die, but then a representative from Chem-X offered him another chance.
