durakken's Birds of Prey #3 - You Might Think review

You Might Think you're a psychotic killer...

Art - The art has no consistency at all. It goes from sloppy, but passable to fairly decent, and back again over and over again. Ivy's costume is ugly. The inker makes a few obvious saves on the line art, but the sharp squiggle shadows are fairly ugly as well. It's probably mean to ding the colorist on this, as a lot of comic book artists/colorist have forgotten the value of fore/back ground saturation and focus, but there are a number of panels where this would be useful to have and yet it isn't there.

Story - This issue is well laid out, progresses the story well enough, but at the same time recapping what's going on I still haven't got clue as to who is messing with the team or why... or how they knew about them. In the first issue Dinah is putting together a team that these villains already knew about existing before they existed and attacked them causing the team to look into why they were being attacked... Right. How does that make sense? We haven't got a clue as to why this team formed, what they are doing, or why this enemy doesn't like them before they even existed. This seems to be one of those writers that can write a story well, but can't come up with a good one.

Also, some of the story/scenes are just off...like, "We went back to our safe house." "Only nobody was home" Huh? Where does that make sense?

Characterization - There is none... which is odd considering about 9 pages is devoted to the women talking. The only thing that could be characterization is that 9 pages and that's Starling and Katana don't like Poison Ivy is a murderer... just like them... Right... So bad characterization or none.

This lack of characterization tied to the story that makes little sense makes this book really bland. I don't find it unreadable, but I also don't look forward to reading it and really don't care for it because there is nothing in it to care for... and this is coming from someone who loves the Birds of Prey title, Canary from those previous volumes, and Poison Ivy from most of her appearances throughout various comics.

With the team coming together here so does the series as a whole.  The issue starts off with a bit more of the team/series administration but having a little scuffle or Ivy joining the team.  As soon as they have figured this out Ivy proves her worth by using a chemical concoction to get one of the enemy agents to talk.  This leads to a pretty well conceived mission aboard a passenger train to extricate two of the people being targeted by the enemy.  Things go pretty smoothly, until they don't a...

Synopsis: Poison Ivy tags along the Birds of Prey as they learn about two more walking bombs on the loose. What's Good? To be honest, I always thought of Poison Ivy as just being misunderstood. She's still a super villain, but recently (Gotham City Sirens) she's kind of loosen up a bit. She's the type of woman that if you tick her off, particularly when it comes to something plant related, she will kill you. So, her being part of this new Birds of Prey group isn't that startling when you think...
