SHAZAM GAY ?

Did anyone hear that DC is going to make Billy Batson [shazam] gay in the Geoff John remake of Shazam ? I sure hope not he is a icon and don't think all the gents that was reading captain marvel back in the 50's would appreciate it. If this rumor is true they will be doing it for simply shock value and I for one will not be buying any JL comics because it's not necessary to make everyone gay because DC want poeple to talk about them. DC how about leave the shock value alone and 1.just make a good story or 2. let another comic company take Shazam that will have a little more respect for a icon....enough is a enough already DC

Leave Billy alone is what I say. No change to his character whatsoever; a kid chosen to be a champion bearing the name of Captain Marvel who gets his power from shouting SHAZAM! is classic.

Don't rock the boat if the boat don't need to be rocked.

@mcbean: I would like to see a source on this. I highly doubt that they are going to make a child gay just for the shock value of it and if they were I doubt they would choose Billy Batson. Unlike marvel who has changed characters sexual orientations from what the creators intended see Shatterstar , DC has tended to instead create new gay characters who will take over a previously used hero name see Batwoman and Renee Montoya

I don't see it as a problem. It's not like Billy's ever had major love interests. I think it fits his character actually.

I couldn't care less, really. If they what to retcon his sexual orientation, cool. Captain Marvel wasn't that great to me, anyway.

I heard they actually made all the New 52 characters gay. Some are just more in the closet than others. Not shock value though, social engineering. Chickens go be coming home to roost y'all.

He usually doesn't have a love interest because he's usually a little kid...

Although if we're going to go through all CM history he had a pretty serious thing going on with Star Girl in the 90's when they were both serving on the JSA. Billy was portrayed as a teenage of equivalent age to Courtney at the time. However the relationship was doomed because the rest of the JSA didn't know Captain Marvel was actually a teenager as opposed to a full grown man. The wisdom of Solomon told him to keep his identity secret and as such he broke up with Star Girl and left the JSA. Sad times for Billy.

They need to stop screwing with established characters, especially ones with long histories. If you want diversity make new characters.

I hope this isn't true... he's an established character. Don't change his orientation just for the fun of doing so. If you want more gay characters, cool; make more gay characters. Don't make more characters gay.

@Onemoreposter: In many cases, GLBTQ people know of their orientation fairly early in life. And this IS a retcon after all.

It's not like this will totally change Captain Marvel's character, it's just a tweak…he's not suddenly going to go out to strip clubs or whatever, he'll still be the moral heart of the JLA. I don't honestly see why it's a big deal.

so unnecessary and totally a bad move.

There's no reason to take a classic character and change them like this, they're just jumping on a diversity bandwagon with this move.

Make a new character and do whatever you want with them DC, but stop messing with the classics so much.

I hate that their calling him Shazam. I can understand retiring the name Captain Marvel but they can give him a better name.

i think its wrong to tamper with a characters sexuality just to fill quotas or sell books. invent new characters and thats the time and place for controversial social issue exploration/exploitation
