Originally based on the ancient poem Beowulf. Creators Michael Uslan and artist Ricardo Villamonte added more science fiction elements to their version, appearing in eponymous series lasting six issues in the 1970s.
Beowulf, of The Geats, his friend Wiglaf, and his men defeat the Franks in battle. A wanderer seeks an audience after they are victorious. This wander tells of Satan attacking the great hall of Hrothgar. Wiglaf asks why Beowulf sails to the land of the Spear-Danes. He replies for fame, which is permanent, and will keep "Beowulf" alive for centuries. The Wanderer makes his way back to the hall and tells Hrothgar that Beowulf has agreed to help.
Beowulf is journeying towards the lands of The Danes when his ship comes across a siren. He jumps into the sea and makes his way through an underwater cave. He comes in close to the siren and knocks her unconscious. Once he knocks out the siren he learns it is an to Hell and a demon spawns from the ether to die a bloody death by Beowulf. The siren awakens and kills the last demon. She introduces herself as Nan-Zee, a saxfling warrior whose she was destroyed, and was later possessed and forced to guard the entrance to the underworld. Beowulf accepts her as an equal and joins Beowulf's crew.
Beowulf lands in Daneland. Beowulf and his main crew members approach the hall when the surrounding area becomes a swamp. The defeat the swamp men and the quicksand drags them under. Beowulf and his companions find that the quicksand takes them to another gateway that leads to the underworld. Meclulus, Satan's watchdog appears and a vengeful Beowulf kills him. Beowulf and his men battle trolldemons and Beowulf kills another of Satan's pets, a dragon, before bringing about Satan's full attention. Satan reveals that Beowulf can defeat Grendel by drinking venom from the black viper in the Darklands and drinking the ambrosia of the Zumak in The Far East.
Grendel has been sent by Satan to the hall of Hrothgar and to harm but the king and queen. Grendel attacks the hall killing the Hrothgar's men. Beowulf climbs up one of the walls and is about to pounce upon him when Satan tells Grendel that Beowulf is being sent on a frustrating quest before Grendel may kill him. Hrothgar. Beowulf tells Hrothgar of his quest and Hrothgar sends two of his best men. Unferth, Hrothgar's Captain of the Guards and Unferth's second in command.
A sea creature attacks the ship on the journey to the Darklands. Beowulf kills the creature before it can drown Wiglaf. Unferth hid aboard with his sword Hrunting. The ship lands on a skull shaped mountain where the Black viper resides. Beowulf and his men travel into the island and face a nightmare demon that was conjured by Unferth. They meet the local pygmy tribe and have a brief battle with them because of a misunderstanding. The tribr believes Beowulf wishes to kill the viper not take the venom. Beowulf kills the viper while extracting the venom. He drinks the venom and he and his men head to Zumak.
Beowulf meets Bruz Solomon, of the Ashers, the Lost Tribe of Israel, who are hunting for Vlad the Impaler. Beowulf, Wiglaf and Hondisco are enveloped within smoke from their fire and are transported back to the hall of Hrothgar. Wiglaf watches the windows, Hondisco the rear doors and Beowulf the main doors.Grendel attacks the hall from the rear dorrs and swallows Hondisco. Satan sends Beowulf and Wiglaf back while Grendel's appetite is sated with the killing of one of Beowulf's men. Vlad attacks the small encampment shortly after Beowulf rejoins his smaal group. Beowulf and Vlad meet in battle and one of Vlad's men impales him through the control of Satan. Satan takes Vlad to the underworld to become his heir and Vlad will become the first of a race of human vamps to walk the earth for eternity.
Beowulf and Nan-Zee are separated from his men. Beowulf and Nan-Zee come across aliens that take earth's greatest warriors and places them in suspended animation. He frees Ulysses who has been sleeping in suspended animation until he is awoken in Beowulf's time. Ulysses tells Beowulf that the ambrosia grows of the Isle of Crete before his Gods take him back to his era.
Beowulf and Nan-Zee make their way to The Isle of Crete. They are tricked into walking through a labyrinth maze where the ambrosia is protected by a Minotaur. The Minotaur's power is being manipulated by Satan. The Minotaur's power is weakened when Satan loses control because of Grendel's attack upon him with a stalagmite. Beowulf eats the ambrosia and he can feel the combined power of both ithe fruit and venom coursing through him. He has been given supernatural strength to face Grendel. Beowulf and Nan-Zee make their way back to Daneland.
Major Story Arcs
Wonder Woman: Ends of the Earth
Beowulf, Claw the Unconquered, Stalker the Soulless, and Wonder Woman battle Grendel and D'grth. Stalker had recruited the heroes and turned on them in battle. Stalker told the heroes that their souls were being traded for his. Beowulf jumped in front of Wonder Woman and was wounded by Stalker's sword that was meant for Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman steals a piece of The Rock of Eternity and transports herself and D'grth to Earth where she defeats him. Grendel makes his way to Earth using the dimensional gateway that had just been opened buy The Rock of Eternity.
Post Flashpoint: The New 52
Beowulf made his debut in Sword and Sorcery #0 in September 2012 as a back up feature. The character was re-imagines into post-apocalyptic setting with remnants of advanced technology visible among the medieval setting. He gained a one-shot feature In DC Universe Presents #19 where he travels back in time to present day New York City. He met the professor Gwendolyn Pierce, who decided to follow him back to his own time.
