Frankly, I don't see the family resemblance 0
This is the first of the "Before Watchmen" titles and I think it deserves a little forward to put the review in context. It goes without saying that the "Before Watchmen" comics pissed a lot of people off. With The Watchmen being one of the most important comic books to ever come out it made sense that a lot of fans would see this as a cash in. I was on the fence about the whole thing. On one hand Alan Moore had written a self contained story but on the other all the right people seemed to be in...

Likes:Obviously, you can't deny that Amanda Conner is an amazing artist. Similar to the way I feel about Darwyn Cooke's art in Minutemen, I can't imagine this book without Conner. Everything is absolutely gorgeous! Also, the mother-daughter dialogue is very well done. There's an ironic contrast from the beginning of the book (where Laurie reassures her mother that everything will be okay) to the end of the book (where Laurie hates her mother because of her past and the training she puts her thro...

Capeless Crusader Reviews "Silk Spectre #1" 0
DC's Before Watchmen event continued this week with the release of the first issue of Silk Spectre. This book features the creative team of Amanda Conner and Darwyn Cooke (also the creator of Minutemen) and tells a tale of two super-heroines. Sally Jupiter, the original Silk Spectre of the Minutemen, is seen here after the close of her career. Her daughter, Laurie, is the primary focus of the book, which shows her attempting to come to terms with her mother's legacy and the choice she faces as to...

I am amazed that this was highly rated! 0
Sadly, what I liked the most about this comic book was the cover, and the coloring by Paul Mounts. Amanda's art is not at its best and it feels irregular throughout the book. The story was kind of like a bad Strangers in Paradise rip-off tied-in with Watchmen through some references. Plus, the Tijuana Bible scene makes no sense: very early in the original Watchmen Sally explains to Laurie what a TJ Bible is (meaning, before 1985, she never knew what one of those was, and it would be highly unlik...

The Curse of Fame 0
Not to reveal too much, but this next Before Watchmen outing is pretty good, with art and writing by Darwyn Cooke and Amanda Conner, it involves Silk Spectre #1 in dealing with her own problems of loss and being a single mom, and hoping to train her daughter to be a fighting superhero, that she forgot that her daughter is really just a teenager with the problems and loves and jealousies she needs to put up with, growing up. But growing up with a famous mom who has a less than moral past. It’s a c...

A big disappointment even with lowered expectations 19
This will be a review of issues 1-4 of Before Watchmen Silk Spectre. Silk Spectre is my favorite of the Watchmen characters, and I think that is why this is so disapointing. It was a very ok story nothing really special and that is what kills it for me because this should have been special or at the very least pretty good. This was the first and I think only time DC made or will make a comic based on Silk Spectre due to the complicated rights issues around the Watchmen characters. I knew going i...
