No Free Lunch!

The Before Watchmen limited series continues with The Nite Owl #1.

My fav writer J. Michael Straczinski and my fav artists Andy and Joe (Our Army at War) Kubert son and father team really rock with this series.

A boy who adores the Nite Owl, has his room plastered with the stuff – action figures, posters, comics, etc. Who could not relate? Or a father who berates the kid. Alas, who could not relate?

The story turns from bad to worse when Daniel finds his mom being belted by his father. Joe’s art is pretty stark in these panels and you really get the shock value. That the father later meets is fate is more a relief to Daniel and his mother as well as this reader!

The Nite Owl teams up with Daniel and takes Dan’s career further. Also, we get to meet the Watchmen for the first time as a team. Silk Spectre is looking good and Rorschach teams up with Dan as well. Daniel’s scientific skill is played up well, too.

Overall, not a bad “origin” story for not only the team but for Daniel as well. Not a bad start!

So far I have only read Minutemen and Silver Spectre, and this one was my favorite. Don't get me wrong, I thought Minutemen was great, and cannot wait for the rest of the series, but this was one of the titles I was really looking forward to.Dan Dreiberg was portrayed as an over weight worry-wart in Watchmen. He looked more like a fan boy at ComicCon than an ex-masked avenger. In the flashback sequences he showed some of his promise as a vigilante, but we did not get to see too much of it. When ...

This is a review for Before Watchmen Nite Owl issues 1-4. I have to say this comic caught me off guard on how much I liked it. It does a really good job of fleshing out Dan's character. In the original story I feel he was probably one one the least fleashed out of the main characters and this sort of corrects that.
