    Origins of Minor Characters

Maybe I wasn't paying much attention but I didn't see this one coming. Before Watchmen was a concept I was interested in seeing from the start for better or worse, but of all the characters for DC to expand upon they chose Moloch, a relatively minor(all things considered) character from the original story who's main claims to fame was being the only "super villain" seen in the comic and having Comedian reveal parts of the main plot to him in a drunken rage. Basically this comic serves to expand on a character that had very little to do with the plot himself(only interacting with the main players from the sidelines). Not necessarily a bad character to expand upon, much like the Minutemen his lack of focus in the original comic leaves a lot of room for creative expansion. So how good a job does this comic do at this task? In a word, okay. It certainly does all the bare bones origin stuff giving Moloch his criminal motive and explaining his rise to power, but honestly I wish it had given some more detailed versions of his battles with the Minutemen rather than what can only be called a comic montage. Still it's a nice little ditty and if you're the type who thinks Before Watchmen is "ruining" the original, you'll be happy to hear this tale doesn't conflict with the original.

On an art note, I like it but I think they seemed to have made Moloch more ugly. Maybe to give him more of a motive? Not sure, but it's weird seeing what seems like a big image change for the main character. (Or maybe I remember Watchmen wrong, wouldn't be the first time.)
