    Minutes to Midnight, 0

Minutemen #1 brings us the debut of DC's Before Watchmen project, and of the titles announced I was most excited for this, which seems to be the general consensus of most people willing to give this event a chance. And this issue really gives them a good reason to put their faith in this project.Cooke decided to spend this issue setting up the cast in a rather simple way. Rather than counting on us having read the original graphic novel, he uses the frame of the original Nite Owl's book, Under t...

Minutemen Went by faster than Cooke-ing Minute Rice! 0

Minutemen Went by faster than Cooke-ing Minute Rice!It is a nice and really quick start Darwyn has Cooke'd up here for the new Before Watchmen Series and, like many Firsts in a series, this one had but one job to do!  ...and that Job was to make me want to read more. Here Darwyn re-introduces us to the original Minutemen characters giving us a nice first person view from the original retired Night Owl. We get a quick nostalgic 1 to 3 pages about each of the Minutemen characters established in th...

Capeless Crusader Reviews "Minutemen #1" 0

Today, the first issue of DC's controversial "Before Watchmen" release hit the stands in comic book stores across the country. The event has drawn a great deal of criticism from fans and industry pundits who have slammed DC for their perceived ill-treatment of comic icon Alan Moore, the writer of the original Watchmen limited series. With so much scrutiny directed at the company in advance of the event, DC needed a strong start out of the gate. They got it.Minutemen, by Darwyn Cooke, chronicles th...

Who Watches The Watchmen, I Do! 0

From PureNerdNip writing for The Capeless CrusaderBreathtaking. Groundbreaking. Cinematic. The most important graphic novel ever written. All of these have been used to describe Alan Moore's seminal 1986-87 book, Watchmen, which perfectly captured the social anxieties of the day thru a critique on the core concept of superheros. So why on earth would DC Comics risk incurring the wrath of fans and the industry as a whole by releasing a series of prequel books chronicling the backstory of what wer...

    Asking for it... 0

Well, since these cats think they can be measured using the original as the ruler, let's play their game...I'm gonna start by saying that I love Cooke's work and this is the book I was most interested in reading. The art is cute, but it doesn't match the level of composition found in Gibbon's original work. Just the same old Timm-inspired style. The story takes some weird liberties with the characters that don't really seem to fit into the Watchmen universe, specially with the Comedian, who seem...

    Entertaining Bio! 0

The Minutemen issue with DC Comics’ “prequel” of Alan Moore’s and Dave Gibbons’ classic was nicely done. The problem I had with the original Watchmen were the many vignettes and breaking up the story into news articles – which is OK, but was overdone.Rather, Darwyn Cooke (DC’s New Frontier, Richard Stark, etc.) does a great job of updating the beginnings of the Watchmen and reflects on what would happen if a team of heroes got together during the Great Depression. How would they get together?The...

A great comic even in the shadow of Watchmen 9

This is a review of Before Watchmen Minutemen issues 1-6. I think the Minutemen were the best ones for a prequel since they werent as fleshed out as the other characters. That is probably why this was so good is because it is able to escape Watchmen's shadow very easily. Darwyn Cooke's art brings a sort of Golden Age feel to the comic with his art and some of the emotional depth of Watchmen. The art in this comic is truly fantastic. The story deals with Hollis Mason writting Under the Hood and t...
