    *slow clap*

I have to start this review, my first in a while, by approaching a subject uncomfortable for some. But seeing how this book features a lesbian as it's hero, I'm sure most people reading this will be fairly open minded, so here we go. Unfortunately, for far too many gay character's, especially superheroes, sometime's a tragic backstory can backfire. Looking at Stryker from Avengers Academy, many felt that him being the victim of sexual abuse as a child and then winding up being gay later in his life could be seen as pretty insensitive, even though I felt the subject was dealt with with a great amount of tact. The problem is, many LGBTQ people take things like this pretty seriously because many straight writers seem to have the urge to make their gay characters the victims of some kind of abuse, be it physical abuse, a strained relationship with a parent of the opposite sex, or any other sort of event that could have "turned them gay", an idea that is terrifyingly inaccurate, and obviously insulting to people of different sexual orientations.

Batwoman, on the other hand, completely bucks this trend in the most beautiful of ways. It's almost sort of tear jerking.

The main focus of this issue is Batwoman's relationship with her father, which is probably one of the few times I've seen a father-daughter relationship that just felt so loving, so heartfelt, so REAL in ANY kind of media. Nowadays, you tend to only see on tv the dopey dad completely unable to even deal with his child's first period, let alone some of the heavy themes in here. Not only that, when Kate Kane finally does drift from her dad, her sexuality is completely established. That alone is such a rarity that it deserves every LGBT friendly award this issue will undoubtedly earn.

The rest of the story focuses on the events surrounding Kate's rise as Batwoman, and while there are some similarities to Batman's motivations, unsurprisingly, it always manages to stay fresh and unique, fitting in perfectly with the theme and tone the rest of the series up to this point has taken. Despite going to some far out places, the central relationship between Kate and her dad is never forgotten, and the last moment really hit me hard.

And the art. Holy **** the art. Williams is back, and in top form. The biggest complaint about this series as a whole has been the dip in quality in the story that happened at the same moment as the art duties changed hands, so seeing these wonderful pencils back in action were a pretty good indication on how much I would enjoy this book as a whole.

Batwoman is EASILY my favorite issue this month, nothing even comes close. Every page, every scene is flawless, and I would highly recommend that anyone skeptical after the second lack-luster arc just shut up and buy this book. It's fantastic.

First off, wonderful review. I still consider myself to be newly introduced to DC but the quality of this issue shines on its own. Your breakdown and insights were spot-on.

Also -- thanks @BumpyBoo: @CircularLogic: @PsychoKnights: for proving conversation on the Vine is possible. Your dialogue amongst each other is a fantastic example of that and I just wanted to say, reading your comments really made my day.

    So...thanks. :)

Only just saw this! But thanks anyway. Just because people don't agree doesn't mean they have to be immature about it after all ^_^

Based on this review, I went out and got the series. Thank you so much, it is excellent!

@PsychoKnights: No, don't keep your thoughts to yourself, that's how we all learn from each other. I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it :D

@PsychoKnights: Yeah, I'm basically committed to at least another 7 years of schooling, unless I just decide to teach... Yay long term career plans!

In any case, I'm just glad that the book took the high road here and avoided any typical stereotypes when writing her origin. It made for a much better book than it otherwise would have been if they spent 20 pages discussing how her relationship with her father tied in with her sexuality.

And don't worry about bringing it up. I RELISH internet discussions that don't end in a shouting match, as entertaining as they can be

I agree that Batwoman's sexuality was handled excellently in this issue, but I wanted to mention that I know a couple of homosexuals that were abused as children. I do not know if any studies have been done of this subject, but I have heard that many homosexuals were sexually abused.

True, but abuse occurs across all demographics, and as a gay reader (well, mostly...) I find it to be a little clichéd. While I'm sure there are people who have psychological or sociological reasons for being gay, some of us just like boobies :P

And who doesn't? Boobs are just awesome, aren't they? I think that every time I see them.

Yeah, perhaps I should not have even mentioned it since I have never looked into studies myself, but I do find it interesting that I have heard that theory, and I do know at least a couple homosexuals for whom their first sexual encounter was rape. I suppose I should just file that away as something to look into at some point.

Be careful though. I am a university student getting my bachelor's in psychology, and while the debate is still open, it's generally accepted that most studies "proving" a link between being gay and getting molested are spotty at best (incredible bias, correlation does not equal causation, problems with sample and randomization etc..) Sure, some people can develop... "fetishes", I suppose as a result of childhood in trauma, and there's the whole "cycle of abuse" theory that people will repeat what has been done to them, but for the most part, sometimes people DO just really like boobs. Or a cock. or both. These things can just happen.

I hope you are getting a Masters or Doctorate in Psychology. My sister graduated with a Bachelor's in Psychology over a decade ago, and she still has not found a job in that field. She's doing other things of course.

(chuckles) I agree with you about some people just liking certain kinds of genitalia. I've heard friends talk about people choosing to be gay, and I'm like, "Look, I don't know about you, but I didn't wake up one day when I was thirteen and say, 'Hmm, I think I'll like vaginas.'"

The way I look at it, you have no choice about what desires you are given. You do have a choice about how you act on those desires. Whether homosexual desires are good or bad is a completely different subject altogether.

Like I said to Bumpy, I probably should have kept my thoughts to myself. I don't like voicing thoughts without having data to back it up, yet that is exactly what I did. Ah well. Interesting discussion anyway I suppose.

First art great review, secondly this is easily the best issue of Batwoman in the New 52. I tried not to judge to heavily the writing of Williams/Blackman in the absence of Rucka. However, I couldn't help doing so when the dip in quality became glaringly apparent in the admirably experimental but haphazardly executed 2nd arc. This is the first issue though that shows that they know Kate near as intimately as Rucka, so much so that if You'd told me he'd returned to write this issue I'd believe you without question. The characerization here was pitch perfect and just so in the pocket. And the art, as always was basically the best stuff on the stands. The exploration of both the ups and downs of their relationship was touching and I admittedly found myself tearing up a bit while reading this issue (my father was a military man and we've had a strained relationship in the past). Simply put this issue was beautiful, touching, and stunning from the first to final pages. I was worried that this would be a basic recap of the "times pasts" issues from Rucka/William's Tec run, but luckily it was so much more. The way they managed to logically expand on Kate's training in this issue was great and should serve as a template for the other bat books. Okay, now I'm just writing a review within in yours so I'll stop now, folk. LOL

      Brilliant! 0

I have loved this series and have been a fan of the character since she headlined in pre-New 52 Detective Comics during Batman Reborn. I have really liked J.H. Willians III art on this series and previous Batwoman stories and was happy to see him back last issue. Although I have saw other artists that I think could do a good job with the character, and the fact that in my opinion there are better artists than J.H. Williams (although he's brilliant), I personally think no artist could do this cha...

The Psychotic Perspective: Batwoman #0 0

InterludeWhen I first heard about the new Batwoman back during the 52 storyline, I was unimpressed. We have plenty of Bat people already jumping around Gotham. Why should we add another? That has pretty much been my attitude ever since, and I did not follow Kate Kane’s adventures…until Batwoman #12. That issue completely blew me away, and I feel horrible that I have been missing these stories all this time. For this reason, I eagerly picked up Batwoman #0? Does the zero issue continue to uphold t...
