What Makes a Bat
This has been a brilliant series and this is probably my favourite new character series in the New 52. I really like Marcus To's art although I have mentioned I liked Ben Oliver's art more. Judd Winick has also handled this character which was probably the best thing out of the original Batman Inc series whilst also making the character his own.
This issue we see how Matu Ba and Rene Diallo came too raising David into the man he becomes.One year beforethe New 52 we see David as a police officer who doesn't like the way they operate. When driving one night Matu and Ba are attacked by a metahuman named Death Jack. Out for revenge over Rene's death David dresses up to disguise himself and gets revenge on Death Jack. After this he goes about fighting crime with other African heroes until Batman notices him and enlists him in Batman Inc giving him the Batwing costume.
This is a really good issue that has been brilliantly written. I like how we see David younger as well as just before joining Batman Inc. It is also nice to actually find out how he got into Batman Inc and how exactly he got the wings. I think it was also a nice touch giving him tragedy in his life with the death (like Bruce and other members of the Batman family) of what was basically his mother.
Final verdict. A really good story and a must have for fans of the character or the original Batman Inc. series. It has a lot of emotion in it and the only thing I could say against the story (and it's small) is that it would have probably been better if it could be over two issues although that would ruin the point of the zero month issues.
