Because he's highly skilled, relentless, uses fear tactics and, while he won't kill you, he will put you in the hospital.

Because he's crazy. Would you willingly fight a guy who puts 12 year olds in odd outfits and has them fight men twice their age?

You have to read Batman.

Because he will put you in a bodycast and would do it again if he felt you deserved it

He's smart, versatile, and seems to have a gadget or plan for everything. He's fought superman so even super powered beings are worried that he might have a plan for them too. The fact that he's human and does all these things makes him even more scary. Aquaman even warned Shazam to not go try to stop Batman "before Batman handles you," as aquaman put it. Now I'm not sure what batman would do to Shazam, but aquaman clearly thinks he has some plan.

Dangerous for who? Thugs. Street level metahumans. His superhuman rogues are not scared of him. His core rogues are not scared of him. He would need a serious upgrade for that. Which Joker fans would not abide. And they have some Cray frInge nuts.

Batman has been the most inconsistent character in DC on a fundamental level.

You have the intellectual and driven Batman from Snyder. The Iberian fighter from Tomasi.

And the town idiot from Lobdell and Johns.

Ten years from now people will still buy the Court of Owls. No one will remember Flashpoint or most of Johns maxi arcs from Green Lantern.

But, Johns has the team book and the Earth One Batman series. Which will be his biggest legacy with DC. As Infinite Crisis lasted 5 years. And New 52 will not live to get old.

Because it hurts less when you die rather than having all your bones broken and living.

Honestly, I think its the fear factor. I mean, the guy is smart, sneaky, and must have a really high pain tolerance, but he's got all that fear going for him. I mean, if I were a criminal, and I knew I was working for the Joker, I would want to hightail it out of whatever hideout Joker has now, because the last thing I want to see is some freaking bat guy that is gonna beat me half to death and leave me scarred for the rest of my life. Seriously, even his mind is so freaking scary that it broke Dr. Destiny.

That being said, I bet a lot of criminals were relieved that Crane got the yellow lantern ring instead of Batman, eh?

Power levels are based on how popular you are.

That is the reason Batman can punch Superman and Wolverine can survive a fight with Thor.

Batman is dangerous because he always has a plan. Not being blessed with super-powers, he has to use the old grey matter instead...Whereas the big hitters can just afford to wade in, Batman uses strategy and planning to target his opponents weakness.
