Bruce Wayne, who witnessed the murder of his billionaire parents as a child, swore to avenge their deaths. He trained extensively to achieve mental and physical perfection, mastering martial arts, detective skills, and criminal psychology. Costumed as a bat to prey on the fears of criminals, and utilizing a high-tech arsenal, he became the legendary Batman.
Grant Morrison explained this in his book Supergods. When Superman was being created his creators based his out fit on that of a circus strongman who traditionally wore their underwear on the outside of their tights. So basically all superheroes ccostumes are based on the circus because the one piece swimsuit a lot of female heroes wear is actually the traditional attire of acrobats.
I think they should have kept the outside underwear. It would have looked cool as armor. The solid gray is a little boring. Bats need some flayvaaaaahh
But for real, I have no complaints over Jim Lee's design.
