@Mucklefluga: Excellent question! and my friend Sinestro is correct. we are doing Comic Vine's Top 100 Batman Universe Stories which you might find of interest. It is only in the nomination stage, but we have 70 excellent stories if I do say so myself that might answer your question...

Must-haves? In addition to what you have, I'd say Dark Victory, Arkham Asylum, and The Dark Knight Returns are MUST-haves. Other essentials I'd highly recommend are the Knightfall collection (3 books), R.I.P., and Hush.

Hush to have as much meaning as possible, pick up a Death in the Family, and while you are at it you might as well read Under the Hood

    -Arkham Asylum

    -Ego

    -Absolution

All three must reads to really understand the character (along Year One, The Killing Joke and Dark Knight Returns of course).

That's fine, everyone's got their own tastes. TDKR is just a pretty significant Batman book, so I figured I'd suggest it if you hadn't read it yet.

The Dark Knight Strikes Again is an obvious choice.

Batman Year One, Hush, The Long Halloween, The Tower of Babel (I know its Justice League. But it deals ALOT with Batman.) and one of my personal favorites, What ever happened to The Capped Crusader?

I'm now starting to read Batman R.I.P. It's weird because one of the first ever comics i bought was Batman #701 which shows you a part of what happened in between the story, it confused me slightly when i read it the the first time but i still enjoyed it :)

@Zomboid: I read all of part 1 of The Dark Knight Returns, i think the story is great but for me i think it's hard to read because of the art. It's not that it's bad it's just all the little boxes on a lot of the pages and the art seems a bit old-fashioned.
