I just finished watching this little nostalgic classic again, and I've gotta say, I'm very disappointed in my mother for letting me watch it back then. With such lines as "Just the pussy I was lookin' for." and "I'd like to fill her void." plus Christopher Walken's charred corpse, biting off noses and Danny DeVito's presence in general make this movie absolutely...AWESOME.
But I have one small question: Wouldn't the plot of the movie have worked just as well, if not better with Killer Croc instead of Penguin? Let's take a look at Oswald Cobblepott's origin in Tim Burton's delightfully sickening world. He's a boy born with a horrible birth defect that turns him into a monster. He's shunned by society and forced to live in the sewers as nothing more then an urban legend. If you were to hear that story without the name Penguin attached, which Bat-villain would you assume starred in this here motion picture?
And again, I loved Batman Returns, one of my favorite parts was DeVito's performance. All I'm saying is that Croc, one of the villains I've always wanted to see on screen, may have fit better into this particular storyline. Just my opinion.
Batman
Character » Batman appears in 23651 issues.
Bruce Wayne, who witnessed the murder of his billionaire parents as a child, swore to avenge their deaths. He trained extensively to achieve mental and physical perfection, mastering martial arts, detective skills, and criminal psychology. Costumed as a bat to prey on the fears of criminals, and utilizing a high-tech arsenal, he became the legendary Batman.
The Plot of Batman Returns
Danny Devito defined the Penguin. You couldn't use him in another film due to how good that version was. He's the sole reason you couldn't have Croc instead.
The Burton Batman films were CLASSIC. I loved Batman Returns. It was as dark as a Batman film should be. There was always one scene that made me feel uncomfortable though. That part where Selina Kyle falls out the window and all the cats start biting her. I can't look at cats the same way, lol.
But Devito's part was excellent. He's what made me interested in the Penguin to begin with. Sure, Killer Croc could've worked, but he was never as good as a villain as the Penguin (imo).
And the penguin minions were the most evil part of the movie. How can something so adorable be so dangerous?!
But I 100% agree. It was a GREAT movie. I remember playing with action figures at a friend's house about the time this movie came out and my favorite toy of his was a penguin with a rocket launcher on it's back.
Let me repeat that.
A PENGUIN WITH A ROCKET LAUNCHER.
A Croc villain would never have brought the same campy awesomeness.
and he could have never run for mayor
I mean, maybe, but even in a tophat, no one is going to vote for a crocadile
a penguin, sure! they wear tuxedoes for god's sake
I love Batman Returns
I remember seeing it on my 13th birthday
such a great Bat-flick
damn, you'd think after all that scandal, Danny DeVito would STOP letting himself get photographed drunk
"There was a plot to that movie? "
Wow, funny. Try watching it again. Just because it doesn't have the broad strokes of TDK and the Joker basically holding up a card saying 'I HAVE NO PLAN, IT'S ALL FOR THE LULZ', means you'll have to watch it a bit closer. It's wonderfully subtle, I think.
" @CiaranStatham: I agree. Up until the point that Christopher Walken is burned to a crisp. "
Heh, which is the end of the movie anyway, near enough, though I think there's something wonderfully sad about Penguin's death, myself. I also like the sad and sombre bit with Bruce finding the black kitty and Selina observing the Batsignal, which if Burton or anyone with even a hint of talent had continued with, would've been a good thing to follow.

I love when I make a post 3 years ago and I'm still right now.
I am so awesome.
You guys have a good point, now...
lol
Tim Burton is one of the slickest visual peddlers in Hollywood today. His films tend to look amazing, full of fantastic characters. Just don't stop and think about the plot though.
@marveldcman9999: How was it a mess...
I freaking love Batman Returns. The performances of Danny DeVito and Michelle Pfeiffer made Michael Keaton look like a weak link. This is, by far, my favorite Tim Burton film. Is the movie a mess? Kind of. Is it a fun, twisted good time? Yes! Danny DeVito is disgustingly fantastic, and Michelle Pfeiffer was sexy and crazy.
