Batman
Character » Batman appears in 23651 issues.
Bruce Wayne, who witnessed the murder of his billionaire parents as a child, swore to avenge their deaths. He trained extensively to achieve mental and physical perfection, mastering martial arts, detective skills, and criminal psychology. Costumed as a bat to prey on the fears of criminals, and utilizing a high-tech arsenal, he became the legendary Batman.
Off My Mind: When Do Superheroes Sleep?
Superheroes dedicate their lives to fighting crime. Crime usually occurs at night so when do the heroes get to sleep? The easy answer would be during the day, right? Batman is sometimes seen crashing in the early hours of the morning and since he doesn't have major commitments as Bruce Wayne, he can snooze all he wants. Plus, Batman probably knows some secret training techniques that allows him to get fully rested on just a few hours of sleep.
Superman with his super-Kryptonian physiology probably doesn't need much sleep. He gets energy from the sun and probably just sleeps out of habit. He can clearly skip out on a few nights sleep if he's fighting a major super-villain situation.
Other heroes actually have day jobs. They're not all billionaires and need a source of income. We've seen Spider-Man crash while trying to juggle his day job (before he was blacklisted as a photographer) along with his criminal-busting activities. Dick Grayson, back when he was a police officer, worked his beat in Blüdhaven during the day and took to the night as Nightwing afterwards.
The heroes may have superpowers and super physiology, but is this lack of sleep healthy? If they've dedicated themselves to fighting crime and protecting the innocent, who's looking out when they decide to take a nap?

People enjoy sleeping. Most understand the importance of sleep. Reports suggest that sleep is important to help with learning and memory, controlling weight and metabolism, reducing irritability and developing a healthy immune system. A good superhero knows the importance of keeping their bodies healthy and staying in shape. Their bodies and mind are their main defense against the villains. They would have to understand the importance of sleeping.
If heroes do take the time to get a good amount of sleep, can they truly rest knowing that while they're lying there, crimes are being committed and innocents are being threatened? It could come down to how dedicated and focused are they in vanquishing evil. It would help if they developed some sort of schedule with other heroes with shifts to cover different hot spots for crime. I don't really recall seeing Batman ask someone to cover his shift while he catches some z's. Spider-Man often worked alone and didn't have anyone he could ask to take his place.
Do heroes deserve time to sleep? They often make huge sacrifices in fighting crime but that's always been their decision. Where should they draw the line between personal sacrifice and protecting the innocent? If someone is harmed moments after a hero goes home for some sleep, should they feel guilty about it? Do heroes change into pajamas or do they keep on their super-suits in case they need to dash out on a moments notice? Perhaps there are some questions we'll never get answered.
Well some heroes don't get to sleep. Just look at Spider-man, or Terry McGinnis, and even static. Its harder for teens because they have school, some work, and then their hero life. Where as adults like Bruce Wayne, Clark Kent, and a few others have day jobs with more leanacy.
The last Batman image looks like a crime scene. I'm pretty sure Bruce Wayne gets to sleep in, Dick needed to be his "own man" and stop mooching off Bruce, which is why he became a cop, to pay for all his expenses as Nightwing. Superman can hear everyone at night, so he probably doesn't rest, and draws power from the sun. Spider-Man, well he has the fantastic four in his city, and other notable superheroes in the vicinity, so why should he care?
The only person one would worry about is Nightwing.
Well when does crime ever affect Metropolis at night? I mean, Clark is barely at work in the day because toy man is running a muck in the toy store, where the children are ... in the day time.
As for Batman, he needs no sleep. He's better than that. He pays people to sleep for him.
I DO often wonder why superheroes arent organized.
Justice League Unlimited in the DCAU seemed pretty organized.
They need to make a system. And there are so many superheroes, that i dont think there would be a problem with that.
But you have to remember, these arent real people. Theyre fictional characters. Theyre made for stories, not to get sleep and act like real people.
btw Grant Morrison said something like that at comic con.
When you think about Gotham has a lot of protectors, so back then batman had a lot of places covered, there was batgirl, robin, BoP, onyx, catwoman, huntress, and even the outsiders.
The current bat family is even better now since we still have batman and robin, BoP, gotham sirens, batgirl(with proxy), red robin, batwoman, the outsiders are still under Gotham well kind of anyway. Well basically what I'm saying is shifting for sleep is easy in gotham they a lot of heroes there. If you look at the roster in Battle for the Cowl you'll just how many superheroes there are in gotham. For the other cities in DC I'm not really sure how
That bruce/robin bed thing was some subliminal pedophile creepiness..."a cold shower"....."then down to the batcave". Must have been a coven of pervs at dc in those days.
That's a very good point. Batman's always fighting crime by night, so did the punisher, but where as Frank Castle just went back to his little hideout and catnaped, Batman was out there during the day as philanthropist Bruce Wayne.
The only two I've ever seen sleeping are Batman and the Punisher. They both work nights and then go home and sleep all day. As for the others... I don't know.
Sometimes superheroes get a chance to sleep and at other times they're up all hours fighting crime. I have to admit superheroes who are members of a team must get no sleep at all. They're at their job then they're on patrol then they're with the team on a mission. It must be so stressful.
Also, there was a Superman/Batman story arc that when Batman got Superman's powers, he fought crime 24-7 all over the world with no sleep.
Then again, above story arc might be irrelevant since it's not in continuity no more. Sigh...
Here's your wake up call Bruce!
I liked the old school stories, where Superman didn't need to sleep, but he did need to dream...hence the dream stories...
I think it's kinda like askin' when a super-hero goes to the restroom. Not as often as they would like, but just enough...
" Nope! I'm surprised there aren't more superhero related sleep accidents. lol "It's just something nobody thinks about. Alan Moore actually looked into this problem with Rorschach. If you notice, you see him eating sugar cubes alot to stay awake.
Sleep is for mortals... muwahaha Personally, I dont want to start thinking about them as having normal "activities" it ruins the whole SUPER thing. You start picturing em having an afternoon nap or sitting on the can in the morning with a coffee and newspaper and the whole coolness factor is GONE!
Is impossible for a hero to have a day job paroling day and patrol the nights as a superhero..
Specially a city cop who needs to stay on his feet all day.. I have a cop friend who can hardly walk when he comes back from work. I really don't know how the heck Dick did it..
" The only two I've ever seen sleeping are Batman and the Punisher. They both work nights and then go home and sleep all day. As for the others... I don't know. "They're considered the lucky ones, they get all the prep time they need. They always look so calm most of the time when I see them.
During Batman:Gotham knights Bruce mentioned having a meditative technique that allowed him to feel like he had slept for a few hours i believe, when it was only for a few minutes.
Better question? How do they hold onto a job? Clark Kent is running out of the office all the time. At least he grabs Superman stories for the front page but how do the rest of them do it? They must make terrible employees. Bruce and Ollie should just start paying them so they can give up on having any semblance of a real life...
