I have never read or been into comics at all my whole life. I was listening to a podcast and they were talking about Batman comics. They seemed quite interesting what they were talking about and interested me so since I have a iPad I decided to download the comixology app and downloaded some Batman comics. There is tons of Batman comics I don't even know where to start I noticed the new 52 series. From what I understand it is a new take on the new 52 heros of the DC universe. Should I start on the new 52 serious since its a new reboot? Would jumping 2 different series of Batman confuse the story? I just have no idea where to start from what I understand anything from Grant Morris is probably my best shot, would it throw things off if I read the old comics of Grant Morris and none of the others? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks P.s. anyone have any good podcast about comics? ATM I been listening to comic vine and ign assemble.

@Droccord: the new 52 green lantern and batman are not exectly reboots.... they kindof continue the story...so i m nt sure starting there would be a good idea... although the arc is awesome...if it were any other title i would have said start with the new 52...but not too sure if its a good idea in the case of batman.

I would download Batman: Year One and start there.

@Droccord: Each title has their own storyline, but the other titles are also affected if something significant happens. The regular "Batman" series is pretty popular. I prefer "Batman and Robin".

I wouldn't recommend Morrison's "Batman Inc" because there is some history he is working with and a bunch more characters. Morrison's Batman is the most confusing bat book at the moment.

It depends on your level of familiarity with Batman. Have you seen the animated series, for instance? The Christopher Nolan films? If you have then you should be fine starting with Year One, then The Long Halloween, and then Hush and from there I'd recommend reading a variety of stories and then follow the writers and artists you like the most since each has a pretty unique take on the dark knight. That's more or less what I did and now a year later, I'm pretty much an expert.

So, to re-cap:

Year One

The Long Halloween

Hush

then whatever story catches your interest.

And If you want to be up to date with the new 52 Batman, then after Hush, read:

Under The Hood

Batman R. I. P.

The Battle For The Cowl (it's not very well written but it's pretty important)

Batman & Robin (Grant Morrison)

The Black Mirror

The Return of Bruce Wayne

and Batman Inc.

New 52 BATMAN court of owls
BATMAN The Dark Knight Returns
I'm new to comics too and these are the only ones I've read.

Action Comics is a good comic for newbies in general and it's by Morrison.

You should read most of the stuff by Grant and then buy the bound edition of the first part of the New 52 Batman series.

When I started I bought all the Batman Archive editions. You can probably find them at your local library, if they are too expensive for you to buy.

new 52 Batman by Scot Snyder..

I agree with a lot of the people here. Year One is a perfect place to start. After that I'd read The Killing Joke. Hush is also a good one. The Knightfall sage is also a great story, and is even more relevant with The Dark Knight Rises coming out soon, which features Bane, the main villain.

Scott Snyder's current Batman series is THE Batman story still running. If you're still uncertain about Batman comics, this run will change your mind, I guarantee.

I do think if you want to start on weekly comics, the new 52 stories are perfect!

I was where you were a few months back. so i MAY be of help.

Just start with Snyder's Batman. (disregard the other ones such as Batman: TDK, DC. Read these only if you want to know more about any crossovers with Snyder's run. I did this for the Court of Owls. you'll get what I mean eventually)

Then with everything else BEFORE the new 52, just do quick google searches on it. Hush, Batman RIP, etc. When you read the new 52, although the effects of these storylines are in the comic itself, they dont particularly touch on it.

example. (spoiler however)

In Batman RIP, batman died... or was brought back in time or some crap from what i read. but in Snyders Batman (new 52) he did in fact come back to life (or back to present??), but its not like you see panels that go "zomg. you died."

*unless you REALLLLLY want to know EVERYTHING about batman.. then yes. go start with batmans origins in year one. :))
