To me Capullo looks cartoonish and Jim Lee too realistic. What is good about Jim Lee are his details, especially on splash pages but Capullo also has beautifull pages.

But I don't see why compare those two ? To me Lee Bermejo, Dustin Nguyen, Kelley Jones, Eduardo Risso, Bruce Timm, and more have much more interresting art than them.

I like the art by Francis Manupul and Brian Bucelleto more than both of them... I hate the way Greg draws Humans and Bruce btw...And sometimes his drawings are just too confusing...

Jim Lee. Capullo draws very well but Jim Lee's art looks a lot better, after it's coloured and all.

They are both really good. But, if I had to choose one, it would be Lee.

Both struggle with faces. Still I much prefer Capullo, more detailed, more kinetic, doesn't require many breaks.

Capullo! Very distinct style . I met him recently down here in FL at a con , very awesome and nice! Glad I met him . Funny enough , lately I've been prefering Faboks art over Lee's.

This is a great thread as these two are my favorite Batman artists. I thought i'd bump this thread up a bit to get more opinions.

After counting all the votes, it seems to be a bit even for both Lee and Capullo.

Things have changed for me. This decision now is actually pretty hard. Lee is overall my favorite artist and anything he touches it turns to gold but at the same time Capullo has grown so much in my eyes that it's difficult to explain. Capullo's artwork works so good for Batman and Gotham that I am even ready to say htat he's better than Lee but I will follow my heart and say that Jim is still the best.

Very interesting. I notice people are mentioning they enjoy how Capullo draws Gotham and his other characters. But in terms of strictly Batman, do you guys prefer Lee or Capullo?

True but he can't draw faces, they all have the same cartoonish look. And his Batman Costume designs (new52 and rebirth) are awfull.

Most of his faces tend to look like faces so I'd say he can draw faces :)

Well thats a matter of personal opinion... by comparison Lee tends to add a hundred pointless lines to his design no one on Earth is going to replicate outside of promotional images.

What're everyone's thoughts on say... Jim Lees "HUSH" Version of Batman vs Greg Capullos new 52 Batman illustrations? If you were to compare those two, which do you think drew Batman better?

@azmoday: Jim Lee is too clean while Greg Capullos is cartoonish.

Capullos can't draw faces nor good costumes.

Technically Lee is better. But I have a preference for neither. To me they are not the best artists to have worked on Batman.

@jb681131: Capullo can draw faces and he draws the best Bruce and Gotham by far. Also idk where you got cartoonish but even IF that was true, it's a comic book. You want everything to look realistic? Or just really ugly and plain like Bruce Timm. Greg Capullo is the Greatest Batman artist ever and one of DC's best in general.

Don't give me wrong, Capullo is not the worst artist at all. If you look throu his different characters you will find that some are strangely the same and much too often. Also if you search for facial expressions, there isn't much, they all have this stiff look on them. Is are is not cartoon per se but feels cartoonish.

Don't give me wrong again, I love cartoonish drawing, but when you draw a title such as Batman, that is not what is expected. There are other titles for that.

The I agree that a bit about Bruce Timm, because I haven't read any comics where all his art is consistently good quality. But you got to admit that when he takes times, he can draw awsome things. Look at the covers his drawn and the looks of the Batman: The animated serie characters. His Batman is perfect. He also invented Harley Quinn and gave her the best look she's ever had.

As for Greg Capullo being the greatest Batman artirst ever, is very personnal because art wise there are many other books I preffered:

It really is apples and oranges, but based solely on their Batman work (comparing Hush and Court of Owls) and how Batman and Gotham are represented, I'd have to say Capullo edges it out.

Jim Lee was amazing back then but has now gone downhill. I stopped caring for his art work a long time ago. His suicide squad illustrations have been ok at best . I'd take Fabok over Lee.

With that said , Capullo is my preferred illustrator in-comparison to Lee. His Reborn preview pages shows that that he's getting better over time.

@jb681131: I don't care about any of the scans of the artists that you posted. Most of them just suck and look ugly IMO. Greg Capullo draws better faces than all of them. If you like them better than cool. But don't bash other artists the minute someone brings them up. I only started giving you my opinion on how I don't like the artists you like because you did it first with responding to someone saying basically Capullo isn't a really good artist. Just stop.

@jb681131: Also as for you bringing up Harley Quinn. I don't care about the character or how she looks. In fact I don't like her design or personality in general. I don't like ANY of Bruce Timm's work or him. I'm not going to go into those reasons here since this is not where to talk about it. But all of the artists you posted as being great or I assume superior to Capullo is VERY subjective and in the end YOUR OPINION. Greg is still by far the best IMO.

i grew up reading comics in the later half of the 80s and early 90s. So Jim Lee has a special place in my heart. But his "beefcake everything" style has not aged that well. Whereas Capullo has only gotten better. From his days in Marvel doing Quasar, to taking over art duties for Spawn from McFarlane, to his most recent work with Batman and Mark Millar's Reborn. Capullo has grown from strength to strength.

    Capullo for me.

Though they are both great artists, I think both are overrated.

IMO, Lee Bermejo is the best artist that has worked for DC recently (unfortunately, he doesn't seem to do interior art much anymore)

IMO, Janin, Fabrok, Rocaforte, Sejic, and Frank are all comparable to Lee and Capullo. Jae Lee may also be up there if you like his super stylized art.

Anyways, Dexter Soy's art is also underrated IMO. Look up red Hood and the outlaws rebirth soy art.

    It's soooo beautiful. Damn
