There are unusual team-ups a’plenty in BATMAN: EUROPA, a new mini-series DC just announced for Januarary. The story will see a virus-ravaged Bats turning to the last man he’d ever want to ally with - - the Joker. That’s right, the Caped Crusader and the Clown Prince of Crime, together at last for what promises to be “buddy story” with the most drastically-opposed opposites you could imagine. They’re going to travel across Europe, desperately searching for answers and a cure before Bats just drops and dies.
The creative team boasts quite a number of names and some exciting "team ups" of its own.The most exciting combo is Jim Lee painting the whole first issue over Giuseppe Camuncoli’s layouts. If you remember those select sequences from HUSH and if you’ve ever seen pages from Lee’s sketchbook, you’ll know that the man’s got serious painterly chops. And since we rarely get to see those chops on the board, so to speak, this is the part that’s definitely got me the most interested.
The rest of the series will feature more layouts “Cammo” and Jock & Diego Latorre will also be contributing. I presume they’re going to be doing paint finishes, too? Rounding out the creative team are Brian Azzarello and Matteo Casali, who’ll be reuniting as co-writers after FIRST WAVE. == TEASER ==
So this mini’s got a stacked line-up, to be sure. Getting back to the plot, I think it’s funny that will be seeing Joker and Batman teaming up. They’ve had probably the most memorable… acquaintance in comics. You know, that whole thing about Batman not killing Joker because it’s against his code, and Joker never killing Batman because he’s too much fun, etc. It's a wonder it's taken them 'till 2011 to go on a "Euro trip" like this.
