Bruce Wayne, who witnessed the murder of his billionaire parents as a child, swore to avenge their deaths. He trained extensively to achieve mental and physical perfection, mastering martial arts, detective skills, and criminal psychology. Costumed as a bat to prey on the fears of criminals, and utilizing a high-tech arsenal, he became the legendary Batman.
@Cheesebob: I believe the point of that clone being a failure was to show that only Bruce Wayne, not even a clone of Bruce, can survive the heartbreak and self-dedication that a young Bruce pushed himself through. All of the clones immediately killed themselves after being born.
A better examination would be Bruce of Earth-0 and a Bruce of another Earth. I believe that the Justice League show actually tackled this question and determined that they would end up working together for the greater good. A semi cop-out, but it does show that Bruce is more than a mindless brawler and can therefore reason rather than just pound
