@thewildj0ker: he has been to the hospital and police custody multiple times, though. And most of the times he has intervened have been ridicolous uses of pepper spray or stun batons to stop minor incidents like bar fights.
Also, I was being sarcastic. One can't be Batman. He can do like the guy you mention does: stop one or two incidents without risking too much.
It's better than doing nothing. I think this world needs more people like Jones, to stand up for whats right. In a country where you can get arrested for carrying flashcards in Arabic, I trust a costumed vigilante over our police and government any day.

Well... good for you.

Yes, it is good for me. Because it means that I still have (some) faith in humanity.
@thewildj0ker: I do have faith in humanity, a lot. Actually my job kind of requires it ;)
The fact that I don't think dressing up and getting into fights is a great way to solve problems doesn't mean that I don't have faith in humanity. That's a bit of a logical stretch, isn't it?

I wasn't saying that you don't, I was just saying that costumed vigilantes, or RLSH as they sometimes are called, are a symbol for people to put faith into. probably shouldda worded it better.
Nobody can become Batman because the world doesn't work like a comic book. Anyone trying to be batman will either get himself permanently injured, get murdered or will be arrested and put away until he is old and gray. And that's just if they get off easy.
Those men and women dressing up to stop crimes/try to be super-heroes are fools. At best they might make an intervention that might do some good. But all and all they are just making things worse for police and the judicial system by their actions and in more ways then people who support them seem to realize. They should not be encouraged, and Phoenix Jones is not a hero.

We love super-hero comics but they are works of fiction and theses so called real life super-heroes are fools at best, criminals at worse.
@thewildj0ker: no problem, I thought you were insinuating something ;)
I think batmans speed MA ability intelligence and gadgets/suit are what ue uses/needs most. Strength is next after that. So you would need peak human speed/agility, and to become an expert Martial Artist. All the whole studying nonstop to become a genius and great detective. Then you would have to increase your strength to a point where you are stronger than most people, but it doesnt hinder your speed/agility
Bwahahahahahahahahahaha that is quite possibly the dumbest thing I've ever read! If your seriously trying to become Batman, then you should seek mental help. He's a fictional character!
Buuuuut on a less serious note, I think being Red Hood would kick some serious ass!
First, I would highly recommend against trying to stop crime beyond being a vigilant citizen or joining the police.
With that being said, before you can even think about equipment and training, you have to think about the legal and personal dangers. I am going to play devils advocate here.
Legal: Batman (as much as I like him) breaks the law on a daily basis. Trespassing, Breaking and Entering, Interfering with a Police Investigation (sorry but you can't keep evidence to yourself), wiretapping and surveillance laws, possibly assault up to the first degree, possession of illegal equipment (sorry a vehicle that shoots gas grenades is just not legal among other things), etc.
Now with that being said a vigilant citizen does have two main law on their side. The right to make a citizens arrest and the right to self defense which extends to protecting individuals. This is what allows private security (believe it or not; bouncers, mall cops, and casino security have no special powers above a private citizen. Except in some states the citizen arrest doctrine is extended slightly for merchant.), private investigators, and bounty hunters to do their jobs and stay out the Grey Bar Hotel. Keep in mind police have liability protection, you don't. If you detain someone wrongly then you could find a lawsuit placed on you. Also, these laws vary from state to state, but most have allow you to use "reasonable force"--the problem with this is, reasonable is relative and you could find out that a judge find the force you used in self-defense or detaining someone to NOT be reasonable.
I would personally get security guard, bounty hunter, private investigation training, research the laws in your area, and possibly get consultation with an attorney.
Even with this, situations could arise where you do get arrested, even if you are in the right, this does happen. In most states, Officers can stop you and ask for identification for any reason. This happened to Pheonix Jones, even though he found innocent, he was forced to reveal his identity, not to mention court and attorney fees.
There is also the issue of possessing illegal equipment. In some states, body armor is illegal. Same goes for smoke bombs and a lot of Batman's standard gear.
Logistical: The chances of you actually stumbling across a crime taking place are pretty slim. Unlike TV, most of the time, officers get there after the crime has taken place. You are just one person.
Anything above the simple bar fight and one person crimes are very dangerous. Organized criminals won't hesitate to track you down and kill you for messing with their business (some individual criminals will do that too). You run a high risk of being shot. Full body armor is quite heavy and expensive.
Overall: Essentially, if you want to stay within the law and keep yourself from being killed, you're pretty much limited to doing Neighborhood Watch in a costume. You're better off joining the Police force, military, becoming a private investigator or bounty hunter.
I would post about equipment, but I think the above information should answer that.
