Grant Morrison says "Batman is very Gay and a sexual deviant"

"I got interested in the class element of Batman: He’s a rich man who beats up poor people. It’s quite a bizarre mission to go out at night dressed as a bat and punch the hell out of junkies. And then he goes home and lives in this mansion. There’s an aspirational quality to him—he’s an outlaw and he can buy anything. He has a new Batmobile every movie. He’s very plutonian in the sense that he’s wealthy and also in the sense that he’s sexually deviant. Gayness is built into Batman. I’m not using gay in the pejorative sense, but Batman is very, very gay. There’s just no denying it. Obviously as a fictional character he’s intended to be heterosexual, but the basis of the whole concept is utterly gay. I think that’s why people like it. All these women fancy him and they all wear fetish clothes and jump around rooftops to get to him. He doesn’t care—he’s more interested in hanging out with the old guy and the kid.”

Grant Morrison always has strange interpretations that no one shares

#3 Posted by DEGRAAF (7881 posts) - - Show Bio

that is funny though

Grant Morrison says a lot of things..most of which I don't pay attention to.

He is so accurate....

Gay isn't exactly the word I'd use but the man has a point

Batman's not gay.

End of discussion.

#9 Posted by Blood1991 (8098 posts) - - Show Bio

So hes sayng while Batman isn't gay, the concept of which is character was built is gay?

#10 Posted by nandizzle (63 posts) - - Show Bio

I'd say he's more of a flamboyant emo goth misogynist. Women hurt him, so he stays away from them and just pumps and dumps them, the emo goth connection is obvious and he's flamboyant in having a bat costume etc...He's also a bit of a yuppie prick, but that's more of a mechanism to hide his bat qualities. Still love him though.

I always though Batman was just asexual.

#13 Posted by Funrush (1369 posts) - - Show Bio

Well, if he likes men, then that just makes him bi-sexual right? Since he goes out with so many women, not to mention having a child with Talia.

#14 Posted by Chaos Burn (1784 posts) - - Show Bio

@Funrush: Grant isn't saying Bruce Wayne is a homosexual... he is saying that the idea of Batman appears gay in the stereotypical sense

#15 Posted by Dernman (15071 posts) - - Show Bio

His reasons are idiotic.

@War Killer said:

He didn't say he was though. In fact he explicitly said he was hetrosexual.

@Dernman said:

Explain. Pwease, that is.

I, for one, can definitely see what he's saying. I don't agree with him, of course, but I think its definitely an interesting point of view. I just think most of the people are reading this too literally and aren't understand the context behind what he's trying to say. Or perhaps they are and they just don't agree, but I don't think that's the case.

@War Killer: I still don't understand why fans are so defensive about this subject. Homosexuality doesn't automatically hurt the character.

Maybe so, but the creator of this thread is obviously trying to use what Morrison said to suport the idea that Batman is gay, which for anyone who knows Batman this isn't true and it has been shown many times that he isn't, so really I don't see the point in even bringing up the issue.

I personally as a fan and a person don't support homosexuality, but that's not my reason for stating what I said.

But to say that it wouldn't hurt the character isn't true because to change a character in a such a drastic manor for no real reason would hurt the character. The fact is that Batman, Bruce Wayne, isn't gay and if people would read the comic books instead of one writer's opinion then this would be obvious.

@War Killer: Yeah, I see where your coming from. I just wanted to point out that Morrison's quote may be misinterperted and happened to use yours because it seemed to best.

And agreed on the "turning him homosexual" thing. I'm all for what happened to Shatterstar, love that character even more now, but its completely different.

He's NOT gay. END

And I really care a F*ck what Grant Morrison (or anybody) thinks about he.

Also I think on Morrison like a very little version of Van Gogh, he made amazing stuff but How he ended? ..... nuts

LOL.... Batman....yes but let's talk about Bruce Wayne's life......

#21 Posted by B'Town (2336 posts) - - Show Bio

Well. Hmph.

There are very good reasons why I love Batman, and the opinions in the article only serve to enhance his awesomeness.

#22 Posted by VampireSelektor (749 posts) - - Show Bio

@War Killer: I don't think Morrison is saying that Batman is gay, but that an element of queerness exists around the character and his supporting cast, a true observation in my opinion.

I don't really see where you are getting that from.

This. Silver/Gold Age Batman is, by modern standards, extremely gay, though.

Obviously Batman is not gay, Morrison knows it and it has not stopped him from writing some of the best Batman stories and in my mind the greatest run in his 70 years of publication history.

That being said, he sorts of has a point. In the 50's, Bat-Woman and Bat-Girl were created to make the dynamic duo look more heterosexual because three men living in a mansion raised questions. However, the two woman ended up harassing the two who did not seem very interested in their charms.

Are really back to this again, I though we cleared this a while ago.

#34 Posted by sj_esposito (457 posts) - - Show Bio

Whenever this topic comes up, there's always a crazy anti-homosexual backlash from fanboys. That's what Grant wants. Just imagine if he reveals Bruce to be a homosexual before his run is finished...

For all you who seem to be so irked by this: would it really be that bad? Would you stop reading?

#35 Posted by TDK_1997 (14889 posts) - - Show Bio

Not true. There is just nothing gay about him.

#36 Posted by VampireSelektor (749 posts) - - Show Bio

@TDK_1997: So the 40's stories featuring Batman and Robin sleeping in the same bed and getting massages together couldn't possibly be read as gay? A WASP (White Anglo Saxon Protestant) man prowling rooftops with his colorful, Eastern European-descended, leg-baring houseboy couldn't be read as gay?

#37 Posted by TDK_1997 (14889 posts) - - Show Bio

@VampireSelektor: It could but it shouldn't be considered as really gay or Batman being one of the most gay characters.

#38 Posted by Nova`Prime` (4165 posts) - - Show Bio

Didn't really need Grant Morrison to point this out.

What?! Bruce is a heterosexual pimp. And Morrison is creepy for assuming that Batman has sexual relations with his son/teenage partner and senior butler who is basically his father. Also, he's Scottish.... so theres that too.

#41 Posted by VampireSelektor (749 posts) - - Show Bio

@NlGHTCRAWLER: He isn't assuming anything, he's just acknowledging homosexual overtones in the initial Batman and Robin stories. No one calls Wonder Woman a dominatrix after acknowledging BDSM as the inspiration for her character.

#42 Posted by RainEffect (3240 posts) - - Show Bio

God I want to punch Morrison sometimes. He's a great writer, but he's just a nutjob outside of his craft.

heh......heh heh..............ha ha ha ha ha..................................hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha...hee, Morrison you so craaaazy......still for once he kinda has a point

#44 Posted by bamaboykmb (149 posts) - - Show Bio

Is Morrisson the first to say this?

#45 Posted by MuyJingo (1746 posts) - - Show Bio

Batman is obsessed. That explains the costume, motivation and reluctance to engage in a relationship.

There is nothing gay about the character unless you choose to interpret it that way, which requires effort.

You've really never read a Batman comic before have you?

Also, people are completely missing the point of what Morrison was saying.
Taken on the surface, without any context or knowledge of the character, Batman is a guy who dressed in black tights, spends most of his time with a young man who also wears garish tights and is waited on by an older gentleman. Again, without any knowledge of why this is, it sounds like a deviant homosexual fantasy.

(I say deviant homosexual fantasy in the respect that it's a deviant fantasy which just happens to be homosexual in nature, not that homosexuals are deviants).

The way Morrison is talking, all superheroes are "pretty gay". Superman flies around in bright tights only to have daily stare-downs with the rich and handsome Lex Luthor.

Looking at it from a layman's perspective; Wolverine has lived for centuries and been in multiple military forces, there is no way he hasn't gotten with at least one guy. Again no context, he now wears tight clothing and spends most of his time with other men in tight clothing who call themselves "the X-Men". He is literally two X's away from a gay porn film.

Batman, Superman, Wolverine, none of them are gay. That's not what Morrison is saying. People need to calm down and actually read the article.

Yes, I know how hypocritical that last sentence was.
