Hey guys and gals, I had a quick question. I was interested in starting to read Batman and I was wondering what are some recommendations for someone who's never read a Batman comic. I am familiar with some of the bigger known story related plots (Barabra getting shot by Joker, Bane breaking the Bat's back, etc). Pretty much the stuff that's widely known. But anyways, if you guys could give me some great suggestions as a jumping on point, that would be awesome.

    * (the shortest way )in the new 52 :

    -batman

    -batman and robin

Both books are quite new readers friendly and any reference is likely to be explained. Considering they threw away a good chunk of continuity there's not so much that really need to be known and you can get away with only those two books. They're also currently the best batbook ...

    * (the more thorough way)in general

about classical characterization, infuence : year one , killing joke, long halloween, dark victory, dark knight returns, arkham asylum

about major plot points that are still on if you want details : a death in the family (about jason todd), batman son of the demon/ batman and son (about damian wayne), batman RIP/batman and robin (all the robin:jason todd as red hood, tim drake as red robin, damian wayne as robin)

The New 52 is the best spot to start. As long as you know the origin of Bats, you'll be fine.

I had a similar question a few weeks back... I just jumped in with the "New 52" and plan on going back later to read Year One, Hush, Long Halloween, and Killing Joke. The Snyder written Batman book is outstanding; I can't really comment on the other books but understand Batman & Robin is another worth reading.

I too am a new reader, granted I've spent nearly $2,00 buying individual comics. Here's where I started for Batman.

    - Sword of Azrael

    - Knightfall (plus tie-ins)

    - Batman 608 - 713 (plus major tie-ins, Final Crisis, Ra'as al Ghul, Battle for the Cowl, Batman and Robin, etc)

    - New 52 Batman 1-5

Most of these you can get in TPB and save a lot of money, also look on Ebay as there are plenty of deals on the TPB versions.

I agree there are some good bat titles for new readers in the New 52
