Batman villains I'd like to see return in the new 52

#1 Edited by Skewer (325 posts) - - Show Bio

The are plenty of good new 52 villains and a few really lame ones. But batman has a lot of very good villains, in fact he's got the best rogues gallery of the entire superhero community. There are many I'd like to see return in the new 52. Here's ten of them. 10. The riddler. He was already in batman issue one but he hasn't been doing anything interesting lately, I hope someone gets around to him soon. 9.KGbeast. He was so severely underused in the previous universe and I'm longing for another story with this guy. 8. Lockup. The one time villain from batman the animated series who we didn't see enough of and I really like to see more of. 7. Firefly. The pyromaniac with the gear, he is an awesome villain that must return. 6. Roxy rocket. She appeared on one episode of the new batman adventures before crossing over for a few issues and just once again didn't get used enough. I really want to see her since the only female villains we have are talia al ghul and poison ivy. It'll be nice to have another female villain thrown in the mix since catwoman hasn't been much of one lately and Harley Quinn moved to the suicide squad. 5. Hush. Must appear, enough said. 4. The ventriloquist. A severely underrated villain that had only appeared on one issue of batman: the dark knight, which I prefer to forget. Good stories can be told with this character if the right writer can get his hands on him. 3. Victor zsaz. Like the ventriloquist, appeared in the same book as a steroid induced zombie. He really needs his reputation revived. 2. Man-bat. Needs to appear. 1. Dr Hugo strange. His son Eli strange just will not do.

What villains would you like to see return?

#3 Edited by colonyofcells (2038 posts) - - Show Bio

some of these might need reboots : killer moth, firefly, spook, catman, wrath, nocturna, magpie, reaper, anarky,

#4 Posted by tupiaz (2185 posts) - - Show Bio

how would you like to reboot them? I don't know the characters 100% but most of them I don't see could be done to any good. Catman did get his reboot pre 52 and hwhat I have heard it was good. Can't remember the story nor the author.

@colonyofcells: i would love to see killer moth get rebooted as a serious version of what he attempted to become (a batman for villains) he needs a villain he cannot beat . someone who can outsmart , out tech , and out strategy him . hush was good but got brought down , red hood was good but became a anti-hero and in my eyes fell flat to what he aspired to be , prometheus was too complicated for his own good. maybe have ted kord take up the mantle as there is already the cosmic blue beetle . both kord and wayne are rich dudes who have amazing tech , just tweak kord to a unique villain , that does not have a drawn out and beaten-to-death backstory, i like ted kord to me he was the technology side of peter parker and to see that kinda mind as a villain(if done right) can be a great threat to batman

@Skewer: I'm glad you mentioned Roxy Rocket. Despite very limited appearances, she's a very fun character and it would be a pleasure to see her again.

And definitely the Ventriloquist. So much potential for story with him. I would even mind seeing Peyton Riley (Ventriloquist II) again. I thought she was pretty interesting.

Which Clayface ?

Hell yes. (on Jones)

I want to see Zsaz as a serious threat instead of some nut easily taken down. A man who cuts himself every time he kills and is totally covered in scars/cuts is imo really only out crazy'd by Joker.

#15 Posted by Nathaniel_Christopher (1668 posts) - - Show Bio

Was talking about Matt Hagen, my bad for not being clear.

#16 Posted by gotwillpower (679 posts) - - Show Bio

Bring on Mustard Man. I liked that episode of BTAS.

But seriously, your number ten should be your number one. Not to mention, he's coming back soon after Death of the Family. In fact, (Batman #15 spoilers)

I agree that some of those characters should have a complete reboot. Riddler is on the way, so that's good. I would also love to see Victor Zsaz make a comeback. Most of all, The Ventriloquist would an amazing story, especially written by Scott Snyder! The only problem is that I fear many of these villains could not hold their own in a full fledge story arc. I think that some of them(like The Ventriloquist) should share an arc. Zsaz & The Ventriloquist would be a sweet story by Snyder.

My bad!! I fixed it up now, I actually meant KGbeast. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWRGY8VhWyU

He's not deep or particularly clever, but The Cavalier is always good for a one shot confrontation!

Captain Stingaree ?

#22 Posted by Skewer (325 posts) - - Show Bio

I also wanted to add two-face! I screwed up by leaving him out because we didn't get a proper story with this guy. Same goes with bane, hopefully we don't see the one from batman the dark knight.

Two-Face has already been given thrice appearances since New 52 began, four if Batman 1 is counted: Batman: the Dark Knight 1-2, had his own mini-arc within Detective Comics, and The Judas Coin. Nevertheless, he will be back, along with Riddler, in Batman 21-28.

Would be neat to see again:

I agree with everyone listed except Victor Zsasz. Not that he's a bad character, he just kind of creeps me out.

You know which villain is due for a reboot. Mad Hatter.

And I never complain when we get Ra's, and it drives me crazy that vandal savage is getting so much more exposer than Ra's when Ra's is WAY more interesting.

Villain wants to take over the world = boring

Villain that wants to save it by killing most of humanity = way more interesting

Killer Croc!

#31 Posted by ngroove (321 posts) - - Show Bio

Mad Hatter = See Through The Looking Glass, Dark Knight 8, Detective Comics Annual 1, and upcoming Dark Knights, starting with 16 beginning of next year

Killer Croc = Batman 1, previous issues of Batwoman, expect him next year in a Speedy special.

#32 Posted by Nathaniel_Christopher (1668 posts) - - Show Bio

Have to be the third to voice the Mad Hatter getting an epic rebooted story line.

Killer Croc when done right is always good.

I'd really prefer if they scrapped the current version of Freeze for the old one, and this one just turned out to be a clone or something of that nature.

OH, and let's get Hugo Strange back into the mix!!!

#33 Posted by batshrine (996 posts) - - Show Bio

@ngroove: Through the Looking Glass isn't canon, and I want that defining Mad Hatter story that looks at him beyond his gimmick. I want them to revamp him!

What he said. Also, the Arsenal special Ngroove means is DC Present.

The Riddler. the real one, not the punk rocker mohawk one that we see in batman 1

Clayfaces.

Preston Payne/another Clayface.

I just want them to return to Basil Karlo and make him interesting. While Preston was definitely a unique one at the end of the day we have too many Clayfaces running around and most of them are basically the same.

Hatter is getting a story next year.@Skewer said:

This is subjective but Vandal is more interesting than Ra's right now IMO.

Ra's always has the same doomsday plan to annihilate the world and then he gets beaten before the plan could be executed,Vandal wants a lot of things(not necessarily world domination) and he to some extent succeeds in it.Also the problem I have with Ra's these days that he relies too much on his mercs/assassins,they practically do everything both intellectually and physically but Ra's gets the credit just for sitting on his chair and doing nothing.I dunno just doesn't feel organic at all,he becomes the uber mastermind just cause the writer says so.

Oh and the whole"I want an heir" thing doesn't make sense,it tries to make him look honorable. In reality we have seen that he will cheat death no matter what so that angle is kinda useless too,

Some of his top tier assassins like say Shiva could kill him and take the pits for herself, why exactly is she loyal to him? and how would she benefit from the destruction that Ra's feels is needed to save the world?

DC made the wrong call when they chose to bring him back in Resurrection,Talia seems more compelling a leader of the LOA than Ra's

Some Nemeses I requested:

1. Thief of Night / Night Slayer - Masterful thief-later mega-jealous murderer, whose technique commonly involves using his costume to blend in the darkness, added with his learned fighting styles. Most impressive feat, I would say, would be the time he actually held his own against Batman, Robin (Jason Todd), and Catwoman, before the catastrophic red winds of the CRISIS took footing of the battle. Active 1983-1986, last seen, still at large, Batman 400, broken out by Ra's, as well as just about every other Bat-Rogue of the peroid.

2. Cornelius Stirk - Incredibly insane, first of many (Mister Zsasz, Long Halloween-verse Calendar Man, New 52 Riddler, as of Batman 15) Hannibal Lecter wannabes, purely believes in consuming people's chemicals derived from fear, so he murders, cooks, and eats people's hearts. Could also fool people in his sway, by somehow having illusory powers, that he could appear in a form more "pleasing" to them (in the past, Jesus Christ, Abraham Lincoln, a woman, even Batman). Despite his craziness, convinced he's "sane". Often a former staple at Arkham, mostly used by creator Alan Grant, between 1988, to his only appearance after Grant was fired around 1999, was by Kevin Smith of all people, in "Widening Gyre" which has since been claimed not even of New Earth continuity.

The Riddler will be in the next Scott Snyder's Batman arc.
