The cult, the last arkham, arkham asylum living hell and there was one else worlds tale in which Bruce Wayne was a doctor running arkham asylum who lived a double life as batman and had been putting Inmates in arkham to treat them which is a pretty disturbing story if you want to see.

This. A lot of the LOTDK stories are darker and some of my favorite Batman stories.

Also, Batman and the Monster Men is pretty dark. I really liked it, anyways.

@iaconpoint For me the only disturbing thing about that was the low quality. Urgh... Happy if you liked it, but too me it was rubbish. R.I.P. was also disturbing and dark, but you have to read Black Glove before it, to get the full effect. Oh, how I loved Black Glove and R.I.P. Batman City Of Crime, also! A great book that is sadly underappreciated and relatively unknown. It was sooooooo good! Very dark and hopeless! If you don't know it yet, you should check it out. Its by David Lapham and it was a very controversial story, but I loved it.

There are several. Among them would be The Killing Joke, most Arkham related things, The Black Mirror (James Gordon Jr. creeps a lot of people out), some of Frank Miller's Batman work, Brian Azzarello's Joker, Batman: Gothic and, really, most Legends of the Dark Knight stories.

@Shallbecomeabat: Oh I never said it was a quality story, just the idea of Bruce being torn apart every day for who knows how long to the point he tells Sups to kill Joker then is mentally broken is a dark idea. The actual execution of the story along with the "90' s style "round robin" storytelling was crap.

@anoldman: If I'm reading its Wikipedia entry correctly, it went into production slightly before The Dark Knight and released shortly after.

EDIT: To be clear, I think it was informed by Ledger's Joker, rather than the other way around.

Well actually I remember when the original Morrison Arkham HC came out, I was actually freaked out to read it because there was a urban legend saying Croc held bats down while Joker went to "work" on Bats. Of course it was just a myth, but the artwork was truly horrifying.

I haven't read anything that deals with the disturbing, dark side of human nature in as powerful a style as Arkham Asylum. It's a genius inspection of the human condition. It talks about how Arkham is a mirror for Batman, but open up the lens a bit and it becomes wildly applicable to our society as a whole. Morrison as his best, really. The art is over done, but it adds instead of distracts.
