Bruce Wayne, who witnessed the murder of his billionaire parents as a child, swore to avenge their deaths. Bruce Wayne IS Batman. I don't even know what I would do if suddenly the cowl was being paraded around the Bat Family as if we were reading a canonical issues of Batman/Superman Generations. I might actually throw up. I love Dick Grayson to death, but he doesn't hold the capacity for generating fear that allows one human to protect an entire city. Tim Drake could do it, but he has time and time again expressed that he doesn't even Want to be Batman. Damian is actually a really bad dare thought up in the DC publishing room and taken too far, I'm sure. A reformed villain as Batman. Well, yeah. Let's try that. Next let's put Zod in red and blue tights and see what happens.
I haven't read Nightwing's book in years so I can't say if he's ready for the cowl, though eventually it should go to him. Now Robin, he's been put through hell and seems more prepared to be the next Batman except he's too young.
A friend of mine had a very interesting theory. Let's face it. We've all seen this story in another form. I'm gonna put it out there without character names. Sidekick tragically dies. Remains dead for several years. Suddenly resurfaces. Is pure evil with a penchant for hating his former mentor. Former mentor "dies". resurrected sidekick mourns mentors death and realizes he isn't meant to be evil, takes up his mantle.
....
Still clueles? How about Captain America and Bucky. If right, Jason (ugh) will take up the cowl.
Jason is badass, but his physical ability never came close to matching Batman's. He wasn't good enough in Bruce's eyes, Nightwing and Robin would never let that happen
I say that in the 2ed quarter of 2009, Bruce pops up & takes his cowl back, making the whole BftC a pointless song & dance. To my sheer annoyance, the Joker will also be absent for months on end. To my joy, Tony Daniel will illustrate the return to normalicy. That's my guess anyway.
Well Hush did try to steal Bruce's identity already, and now that he is out of the picture maybe he will try and take the mantle for himself. Also in the first page of the first issue of Batman RIP it showed Batman and Robin, it looked to me like Tim Drake was still robin.

what sucks, my idea or the thought of it coming true? They are all the same age and the current sidekicks are getting older. Not to mention the west kids are already wally's sidekicks, superman has no sidekick and the ranks are about to get shifted around in the bat family. Remember Hush remade his face to look like Bruce wayne, well the Bruce waybe who is standing besides Damien is i suspect is Tommy Elliot. Further evidence is the Hush Bandages wrapped around elliot's left leg. a good catch methinks.
The Batman on the Far left appears to be A TIM DRAKE realised batman, with his classic bow stick in hand, and a stern look on his face.
I think the second Batman from the left is Dick Grayson. His bat symbol seams to mimic his Nightwing costume a little. I'm still trying to figured out the armored Batman. I thought Jason was going the Red Robin route.
Batwoman (kate kane from 52) I suspect she is on the case for clues to a crime, or something really important, could the giant penny have anything to do with it? I think we will see this resolved in the greg Rucka and Jh williams batwoman mini series.
A Big joker playing card, what is a batman universe without a joker? This whole image is set against a backdrop of the bat cave, proof = Giant penny, joker image and some stalactites.
Also, what's with the reversed J on the Joker card? Will Jokers motives be reversed as in he'll want to find the right Batman he's come to hate all these years?

I honestly though lane would become the wearer of the suit of sorrows, because he never wanted to be evil and do evil, The trauman Dr Hurt put him through made him bad, if he became the new Azreal he could finally atone for his sins? wasn't Detective lane Black? like the black guy who put on some suit in the recent issue of batman and the outsiders, which in turn, was a tie in to the overall RIP storyline.
The composite batman with two halfs looks to me like a twisted version of harvey dent two dent, and he was the Gotham city protector during the missing year of 52. he seems to be blocking out one half of his face. Cool colours on this suit. Red and Black like all the other red and black symbolism from Morrison's run--ie. black and white floors, flowers, jezebel jet, and more.
The Giant Penny in the cave is scarred on one side, two-face is definately involved in this storyline.
The Magify Glass that batwoman is holding has me intrigued. hercule Poirot is on the case!
Alfred as a french supe spy looks incredible, Tony daniel really knocked this image out of the park. They should collect the image by Phil Jiminez and ethan van sciver and this one and put them in a collection of some sort, regardless of how the stories turn out or if we get them all, these look great. exciting.
Harley Quinn looks ? I don't know vexed? confused? Ponderous? and with a big Gun in hand, with the classic joke bang sign sticking out. is that a direction she is giving us?

A) The "J" on the Joker card is backwards. B) The Batman with the yellow chest oval on the left has a bo staff, so that's probably Tim. He seems to be wearing the Batman costume that Bruce wore when Tim became Robin. C) Harley, lamenting the Joker's absence? Seems kind of crazy, but Daniel is definitely aware of all of Grant's run so it'll probably follow from that. D) Alfred Pennyworth, loaded for bear. He looks pretty great here, actually. I doubt she's actually battling for the cowl (and neither are Harley and Alfred), but she'll probably play a fairly major role. J) Damian, lookin' sly, tuggin' on the bandage around the leg of... K) "Bruce Wayne", who, judging by the bandage, is probably actually Hush, who performed plastic surgery on himself to look like Bruce Wayne back in the "Heart of Hush" arc in Paul Dini's [i]Detective Comics[/i]. I assume Damian's using Hush to angle for a place in Bruce Wayne's will, or a spot in Wayne Enterprises or something.
Bat-artist Tony Daniel has the solicits for Batman: Battle for the Cowl #1 over on his blog.
The three issues will have three interlocking covers which will have different characters. Of interest here - no Tim Drake (I'm guessing he'll be front and center of #2 or #3), Batman's trainer Wildcat shows up, and Batbrat Damian (or is it Damien?) is still in his own Robin outfit, adding fuel to speculation that he'll be Robin when all's said and done.
Oddly, as unsatisfying as RIP was, I'm actually really looking forward to this...
The solicits are out and BFTC is front and center on the cover of Previews magazine. I'm very honored to be entrusted with this responsibility and will be working hard to ensure everyone stays in character, as well as adding to their characters as well. So I have lots of reading I've been catching up on since there are a lot of peripheral characters in the book. Basically almost anyone that has had anything to do with Batman, allies and enemies alike, makes an appearance.
The cover you see is still in progress. A character or two will be added to the first one, either Black Canary or Man-Bat or both, as well as background elements from the 2nd cover will overlap into the first. So the 3 covers put together will make a large poster image. I ended up inking it out of necessity because of a Previews deadline and my being sick for the week leading up to this ate away all of my alloted time. Whenever I ink something of mine, I respect the inker's job even more. Sandu would've made this look much better in my opinion but missing the fed-ex cut-off with the pencils sealed the cover's fate and left it all up to me. And I'm a slow inker since it's not something I do every day and prefer not to do.
But coming in as part of the new team is Ian Hannin, who has colored the Batman 684 cover with Nightwing dropping the blue rose a couple of posts prior. His excellent lighting and rendering techniques will make an impact with my work and I'm looking forward to having him as part of this small team.
We have a crazy 2 page BFTC promo teaser piece that will appear in every DC comic in January coming up and I'll be posting that as soon as they're printed. Perhaps a step by step as well, where we go from sketch, to pencil, to Sandu's inks and Ian's colors. So be on the lookout for that.
