@emyrs: Best way to start is to start with New-52 Batman. Scott Synder's work with Court of Owls and everything beyond that is a simple and easy way to jump in. It can get confusing because some of the stuff from before the New52 relaunch IS considered to be CANON, but also some are not. If you're in it for the story, read Hush, Long Halloween, Black Mirror, Killing Joke, or No Man's Land (ALL of which are Pre-52). If you're in for the long haul and want to stay with Batman for many years to come... heres a list in order of what you should read in terms of New52:

Batman: Zero Year - Scott Synder New 52

    Origin:

Batman: The Dark Knight Issue # 0

    Detective Comics (2011 - ) Issue # 0

    Secret City:

    Batman (2011 - ) Issue # 0

    Batman (2011 - ) Issue # 21 - 24

    Dark City:

    Detective Comics (2011 - ) Issue # 25

    Batman (2011 - ) Issue # 25 - 29

    Savage City:

    Batman (2011 - ) Issue # 30 – 33

Scott Synder New 52 - Initial New 52 Launch

Batman & the Court of Owls:

    Batman (2011 - ) Vol. 1 Court of Owls

    Batman (2011 - ) Vol. 2 City of Owls

    Death of the Family:

Death of the Family - Joker: Death of the Family pgs. 1-133

    Batman (2011 - ) Issue # 13

    Batman (2011 - ) Issue # 14

    Batman (2011 - ) Issue # 15

Death of the Family - Joker: Death of the Family pgs. 134-335

    Batman (2011 - ) Issues # 16 – 17

New 52 - What's currently going on in the Bat-verse

    Batman Eternal:

    Batman Eternal (2014 - ) Issues # 1 – 35(This keeps going - it's an ongoing weekly series)

    The Meek:

    Batman (2011 - ) Issue # 34

    Endgame

    Batman (201 - ) Issues # 35 - 36(This is still ongoing as well)

@emyrs: I also forgot to mention the new run on Detective Comics... its fantastic so far and if you read most of the stuff up top then you can just jump right on board. You probably could just jump in now as long as you know the basic premise of Batman (which I'm sure you do). Here's the list:

    Icarus:

    Detective Comics (2011 - ) Issues # 30 - 33

    Detective Comics (2011 - ) Issue # 3: Annual

    Detective Comics (2011 - ) Issue # 34

    Anarky:

Detective Comics (2011 - ) Issue # 37(Again, this story arc just started and is ongoing so once you read this issue, just keep on going)

@emyrs: Let me be clearer than they have been.

DC had 2 major reboots :

    • in 1986 after Crisis on infinit earth
    • in 2011 after Flashpoint

Thus making 3 main Batman timelins

    1. 1939-1986 : Gold, Silver and Bronze ages
    2. 1986-2011: Post-Crisis or Modern age
    3. 2011-now: Post-Flashpoint or New52

If you want to be up to date you have to read the New52 stories. The main Batman Title is not very good in my opinion (exept maybe for the Owls arc). The Detective Comics Title is bad up to issue 17 I think and way better from issue 30. Batman & Robin is awsome. The Dark Knight is very dark and good. Nightwing then Grayson are also good to read.

In parallel to the New52 you should get to know the modern age Batman with very iconic stories. Here is a good Timeline with all stories and main ones in bold : http://www.comicvine.com/profile/batshrine/blog/batman-tpb-complete-chronology/79247/
