The Good

Georges Jeanty has drawn quite a few issues of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. It's always interesting to see an artist take on other characters and being able to see how they handled other universes.

At the end of Death of the Family, we saw Joker's face/mask fall off. We knew something would have to come from that and this is where we get to see what happened to it. It's almost hard to believe that it's still intact but thankfully there is mention of it smelling bad.

The Bad

This is a comic and a character I wish didn't exist. Basically, I don't really see a need for this character. This might the first time in a long time where I really don't want to see a continuation.

For a "new" character, her origin is a little unclear. It's all laid out but there are moments where confusion sets in. Either this is intentional or the art doesn't quite match up to what the plot is trying to convey. It does go back to her childhood (surprise!) but in this instance, she didn't suffer from any sort of abuse or hardship. The biggest confusion is when she is born and her joyful father suddenly changes his temperament. There doesn't appear to visually be wrong with her. We get the impression she is deluded in some way so perhaps we're supposed to be confused? Maybe we're not really seeing what really happened?

Joker's daughter, named Duela by the way, makes her way to an underground city, beneath Gotham. I can't say I know too much about this place or the people there. I think maybe there's been some mention in CATWOMAN. The question is, does Batman know about this place? Would he care? Duela is determined to wrestle control of the city for herself. Are we supposed to believe or accept she automatically has some sort of fighting skills? Actually it turns out she really doesn't.

The name Duela may be a throwback to Duela Dent. Thankfully it's pretty safe to assume that is the only connection between this character and that one.

Joker would be appalled to see his face used in this issue.

The Verdict

For some reason I cannot understand, there seems to be a lot of interest or buzz in this issue. After reading this, that makes even less sense. It's nice to see Georges Jeanty on a DC comic. The problem is this didn't really feel like a DC comic. Joker's Daughter may have wanted to stand up for the women in this mysterious secret underground society but everything else about this issue is something I want to forget. Joker's Daughter is headed to CATWOMAN #24 next. I will be sure to avoid that.

Can't believe this was such high demand, this has never caught my interest. If it was actually the jokers daughter it would be interesting

Hands down this is the worst comic I've ever read. Wish I would of never bought. If you get this comic for free; you are still paying too much!

YES!!! A one star review!

#12 Posted by EvilPenguin543 (167 posts) - - Show Bio

I never thought I'd see a one star review here on Comic Vine.

#13 Posted by Nightwing_Beyond (144 posts) - - Show Bio

It's funny. Now that I know it's so bad, I'm kind of tempted to see just how crummy it is... It's certainly the first time I saw a one star comic on Comicvine in recent history. Nah, too many good books this week to buy something bad.

Lol I knew it

#15 Posted by dagmar_merrill (2172 posts) - - Show Bio

Well.. happy I passed on this.

#16 Edited by akbogert (3150 posts) - - Show Bio

Even the guy at the comic book shop basically told me not to buy this issue.

When I mentioned "I was hoping they were going to use this to bring in Duela Dent," he just looked sad.

Has Anarky Jokers bio-logical son showed up in the new 52 yet?

#18 Edited by dauntes_patron (61 posts) - - Show Bio

G-man I wish you would've reviewed this issue earlier so I could've avoid it.

#19 Posted by longbowhunter (5829 posts) - - Show Bio

Hmmm...can't say I'm surprised.

#20 Edited by cameron83 (6416 posts) - - Show Bio

Please don't make this be the new 52 version of Duela Dent.....wait....you know what? I don't even care anymore. I hate the new 52 (officially). Everything about it....just awful.

Anyway, glad I passed on this. WAY too many good things this week to get.

I originally intended to pick this up thank god I realised it would be bad

#22 Posted by jsphsmth (1136 posts) - - Show Bio

Sounds like I will be mad that I left this issue on my pull list. I knew it would be bad, we are talking about Ann Nocenti's work. I finally gave up on Katana and Catwoman is actually much worse. I should have known better. I should have known better.

#23 Posted by RulerOfThisUniverse (5585 posts) - - Show Bio

1 star? It was THAT bad?

#24 Posted by Shallbecomeabattoo (351 posts) - - Show Bio

Holy moly, that sounds bad! Why they are giving Nocenti still high profile books is a mistery to me. Even my girlfriend stopped reading Catwoman and thats her favorite character in the world.

#25 Posted by kantrip (100 posts) - - Show Bio

I've been seeing 1 star or 1/2 star reviews on this all over the web today. But to see it on Comic Vine as 1 star? Wow! Now to see how all the ebay bids and speculator buzz about this issue/character reacts to the reviews and reader feedback.

#26 Posted by SynCig (318 posts) - - Show Bio

Has Nocenti ever written anything worth reading? She seems to consistently get awful reviews and yet she still gets work.

#27 Posted by locuas (5 posts) - - Show Bio

personally, i preffered joker's daughter when she was supposed to be from an alernate universe where the joker wa sone of the good guys(OH WAIT! that universe was changed so ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE IS EVIL! so there is no good joker or good luthot counterparts. my bad)

#28 Posted by cerial442 (69 posts) - - Show Bio

If you go to Bleeding Cool, this book is all they post about. They even predicted lines outside of comic stores for this book. They also posted a link to an EBay auction selling the 3D cover for $130. Supposedly the 2D version is sold out at Diamond. I guess you can create buzz out of anything. I have no interest in the book.

#29 Edited by dagmar_merrill (2172 posts) - - Show Bio

@syncig: Her Daredevil stories are pretty good and she made Longshot which was also kinda good.

#30 Edited by lifeboy (1610 posts) - - Show Bio

No just NO, but F### NO! (on this one star score) That cover alone is worth four stars, not to mention its holographic...

#31 Posted by Kewirje (32 posts) - - Show Bio

Am I the only one who expected this?

#32 Posted by Wilbertus (293 posts) - - Show Bio

Wow. A 1 star review. I have to wonder though how much of that is just a pre-existing hatred towards the character. I mean, I didn't really like the character when I first heard about it, nor was I interested in buying this comic. But there have to some people who'd appreciate this, right? RIGHT?

Anyways, it is always good to see your expectations confirmed :)

#33 Posted by G_Money_Christmas (859 posts) - - Show Bio

This is the only one I've seen where my LCS had zero 3d issues and they didn't mention it didn't ship like they always do. Figures it would suck

#34 Posted by MadeinBangladesh (4962 posts) - - Show Bio

Damn lol Joker and Joker's daughter both sucked.

#35 Edited by dangermart (156 posts) - - Show Bio

@g_man Very fair review, let's hope this oddball's comics career is short-lived.

@wilbertus I don't think you can say we have 'pre-existing hatred towards the character'. This gal is new, it's no Joker's Daughter we've seen previously.

#36 Posted by CaptainHoopla (596 posts) - - Show Bio

This is a great example of why we never see Catwoman reviews. We would likely be seeing far more 1 stars and who wants to intentionally read and review this torture.

Has Anarky Jokers bio-logical son showed up in the new 52 yet?

he's going to show up in an upcoming Green Lantern Corps issue focusing on John Stewart's history as a marine

#38 Posted by jwalser3 (4393 posts) - - Show Bio

LOL.

I knew it! Now get to my Killer Croc review!

#39 Posted by johnkmccubbin91 (3481 posts) - - Show Bio

I seriously can 't believe why people are paying so much for this issue or any with the character in it. I understand the hype the character has made but the writer has not done good lately and by the sounds of it this character is exactly as I thought she'd be a Joker rip-off that should never have been created.

Sad thing people are going to read this pile of crap over the good DC comics -_-

Having a female Joker would be interesting to develop on. She could grow into a villain who has a completely different obsession. There are too many moments of Joker obsessing over Batman, sure that is the appeal however sooner or later its going to get too repetitive. The story of Duela could continue from Joker wanting a Son or Daughter and kidnaps Tim Drake turning him into a Joker. After Joker's plan was foiled and Tim Drake was saved he decides to have Duela with Harley Quinn. I haven't read this comic but I remember that Harley Quinn couldn't get pregnant so that's why she and Joker kidnapped Tim Drake. So maybe Duela was kidnapped from an orphanage, I wouldn't want to say the President's Daughter because that's just wrong. And, the story could continue with Duela growing an obsession of her own towards Tim Drake like Joker's Batman obsession. It's possible in later stories could be Joker pleasing his Daughter and that could reduce the repetitiveness of Joker's Batman obsession.

No surprise here, but this low review actually kind of makes me want to read it.

#44 Posted by JoeC_Mommy (87 posts) - - Show Bio

Wow. Like others, I'd heard that this was a must-have of Villains Month, so much so that sight unseen, its price on eBay was ten times its printed price. It looks like a little mystery and a lot of hype went a long way here.

I swear someone payed Rich off. They were the only ones creating any sort of hype for this book, and did so based on pretty much nothing.

@syncig: unlike the creators that are fleeing due to their hard stances and passion for their characters, it appears Ann just tows the line. sometimes that pulls you along right to the top. thank god lemire got G.A. away from her.
