We stop your usual "Batman/Superman" story; to bring you a "DOOMED" story arc--spinoff issue.
Amazing Spider-Man #2 review!!!!! Greg Pak, Tom Derenick, Karl Kerschl, and Daniel Sampere have a Batman/Superman "DOOMED" spinoff story. If you haven't read any issue from the DOOMED story, I recommend you check this one out first. It will certainly spark your interest in the story.
The Good
This DOOMED story takes place after the events of Superman vs. Doomsday. Having become infected with a Doomsday virus, Superman's allies are on the hunt for a cure in the Phantom Zone. Before the man of steel turns into a rampaging Doomsday monster or is killed by those that fear him!
So apparently Doomsday is back. That's great right? The monster that originally [sorta] killed Superman back in the 90s is back in the New 52. Having not been popular since the 90s, D-day has had numerous appearances through the years to try and strike "gold" in a mine that has already been looted. So now we have Doomsday making another appearance and trying to cause havoc; again. Obviously, I wasn't too keen in reading this story arc because of Doomsday no longer being popular; however my mind has been changed slightly after reading this issue. And I'm interested in seeing how it will work out for Superman.
I would have to say that Greg Pak's story really kept me engaged with the characters; especially Batman. This being his and Superman's team-up book, obviously Batman will be the main focus for this issue. However, I do like how Pak used this element to help draw focus on the other characters that aided Batman in his trip to the Phantom Zone. The thoughts of Batman on Superman being infected with a Doomsday virus and how he reacted to being in the Phantom Zone; really made me feel like I was there side-by-side with the character --instead of just reading about what he was doing. Greg Pak really does an amazing job when he writes for this series, because he puts the reader in the situation; instead of them just reading about the characters. I think that's why this Doomed story worked really well for me. Because I got to experience the fear and hope that Batman was having while searching through the Phantom Zone. And how Batman's thoughts made the other characters (like Wonder Woman) feel relevant in this issue.
The art team on this issue did a phenomenal job! I loved the contrast between the Phantom Zone and the real world; as both were drawn and colored, very uniquely.
The Bad
No complaints.
The Verdict
This being my first taste of the DOOMED story arc, I found it very intriguing. While I'm sure that not every issue will be this good, I did like the story telling by Greg Pak and the artwork was really amazing. I recommend this issue, but I can't necessarily recommend the entire DOOMED story arc. 5 out of 5.
