Batman Gothic scared the hell out of me when I was 11 (I didn't read it when it came out). Batman Gothic still scares the hell out of me. Grant Morrison claims to be reading a lot of gothic literature at the time of writing this story so he wanted to bring Batman back to his gothic origins. He also must have been reading a book about how to make me s**t my pants. Morrison does a great job at showing how damaged Bruce Wayne is, a technique he uses to great effect in Batman R.I.P. almost 18 years ...

Several mob bosses of Gotham's underworld are under attack by an individual that has them so spooked, they have no choice but to try and seek an alliance with Batman. Batman refuses to help them because they're only getting what's coming to them, since they are completely responsible for the crime in Gotham.
