Whose Gotham is it?
Batman/Superman #11 review and Amazing Spider-Man #2 review!!!!! Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Ray Fawkes, John Layman, Tim Seeley, Emmanuel Simeoni join Penguin on the Sinking of his criminal empire!
The Good
In this issue, as told by the cover, Penguin loses his criminal empire! Falcone has been one step ahead of everyone in Gotham City; including Batman! How is Falcone doing this and who's given him all this insight into gaining control over Gotham City? All questions that continue to surround these issues. And the writers are starting to explore these questions with giving more-and-more control to Falcone. That is one part of this issue that, in my mind, makes it standout!
I didn't like how the writers opened up this issue with a literal bang. It was really confusing for me because Batman had just talked with the Spectre in the last one. However, with the ending of this issue; the writers actions in this issue are justified. Obviously the writers are trying to cover as much ground as possible to tell one FULL story by issue 60. So these strange cuts from one issue to the next is irritating, but acceptable at times. This is one of those times!
Like I said, the beginning [or opening] was a literal *bang* with a huge explosion. The story started getting choppier from there, with jumping back-and-forth between Batman and Penguin, however once it started nearing a mid point [or closing for this issue] it made sense. The explosion was nothing but a diversion to take up Batman's time-and-attention, so he wouldn't be able to stop Falcone from taking away Penguin's empire. The story was handled quite nicely when the plan was fully revealed.
The artwork is amazing! The art team did such a great job with the design of the characters. You have to look at it for yourself, to truly enjoy the art in this issue.
The Bad
The beginning was pretty choppy. It started with a huge explosion and cut back-and-forth between. Batman vs. Pyg and Pegnuin losing his criminal empire. That is my only complaint with this issue.
The Verdict
Choppy in the beginning with huge explosions and little explanation-- towards the end though; it became focused in telling a story about the fall of Penguin's criminal empire. The writers did a great job with this seventh issue of the Batman: Eternal series and I'm once again interested in seeing how it will turn out. Hopefully the next issue will be just as focused as this one. 4 out of 5.
