Plot Summary

January issue, sold early Dec.

Best-selling comic book writer/director Kevin Smith (GREEN ARROW, Daredevil, Clerks) steps into Gotham City to write this 3-part miniseries event! Practically from out of nowhere, the mysterious masked killer known as Onomatopoeia returns and sets his sights – and sounds – against The Caped Crusader!

Readers will be granted access to several villains from the Batman rogues gallery - some you know well, such as the Joker - while others range from B-list to rare. Prepare for some disturbing imagery in this first issue of the three-parter. Smith takes this pool of villains and pits them against each other while all of them have the Batman and the police to also worry about.

The major plotline is that someone has taken the Joker's poison and cut down with other ingredients to create a new club drug called Chuckles. It's worse than Xstacy and is taking over the street scene. Needless to say than anyone utilizing Joker "technology" without his express approval is in more than trouble than a copyright lawsuit.

I agree with G-Man that there's some stuff that comes out regarding the Joker that might leave some fans cringing while others would might say, "It's about time!"

I love this book...flat-out love it.  I'm a big Kevin Smith fan (though I didn't care for the Clerks Animated Series at all), he's one of my personal heroes, so naturally I'm biased, but still, even if I wasn't I would still dig this book.  I like the art, Walter Flanagan will definitely be getting a few phone calls from other writers following this arc, and the writing is awesome, the story seems like it's going to rock (love the idea of a gang war between Batman villains), and Victor Zsasz is legitimately scary.  I seriously never though the guy who wrote "Chasing Amy", "Jersey Girl", and "Mallrats" could write such creepy, disturbing material but, low and behold.  There is a dark, twisted corner of Smitty's mind after all.

That being said, there has been some controversey about this portrayal of the Joker, as being well...y'know.  I have to admit, the first time I read it, I was a little put off.  I think Smith could have reined in those allusions a little bit, but going back, I actually find this portrayal gaining favor with me.  It's not my favorite by any means (The Killing Joke and Lovers and Madmen take that honor), but it is refreshing to see something different (emphasis on different).  I've also found myself quoting some of his lines in my daily lingo (such as "Seduced and abandoned"...that panel cracked me up even the first time I read it).  Also, I don't see what all the fuss is about.  Smith isn't the first writer to do this (Morrison's "Arkham Asylum", anyone?), but I guess the idea is startling enough that being even the second writer to go this direction (and in all fairness it has been 20 years since AA appeared) that it'll still cause an uproar.  Personally, I think people need to just calm down and enjoy the story.

Can't wait to see where this book goes, and if the Joker ever does get a second chance with Onomotapoeia.

    I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. :))))

So, I have to wonder how many villains is Smith planning on cramming into the story here? However many I am sure they will be put to good use and given a portrayal we may not have seen yet. Such as the Joker is done here. I am not quite sure I have ever seen him so depraved as i did here. He has always been the worst of Batmans villains, here Smith takes him into the gutter. The story revolves around the Joker discovering that Maxi Zuess took his Joker venom and made a recreational drug from it.  A genius idea if only because you wonder why no one has ever thought of it before. Needless to say The Joker aint happy. At the same time there is a new villain in town who is killing other villains. So far so good. I can not wait to see where Kevin Smith takes me with this one.
