The End of the First Arc, Will it be a Happy Ending?

Batman Beyond has finished his first story arc in his on going title, there will be some developments and new threads as a result.

    The Good

I've mentioned before that I really enjoyed the Batman Beyond miniseries with Hush but the first couple issues of this series didn't quite have the same feel. It was odd since we have the same creative team. While we're not quite in that dark corner the miniseries took us, some of that original feel is coming back. I can appreciate new villains like Matter Master and the return of the Justice League, so it's good we're getting some new and old compared to the animated series. The high point is Adam Beechen capturing the exchanges between Terry and Bruce. The Justice League wants "Batman" to join but Bruce is against it. There is a final say on the matter.

Even though this concludes the first story arc, there are some juicy seeds planted for upcoming storylines, one involving a certain supporting character that I didn't really consider being of any major importance in this series.

    The Bad

Things are picking up but I'm left still wanting more of what we had in the miniseries. I can appreciate a new villain like Matter Master, even if I wasn't crazy about his concept. We can't have just Beyond versions of all of Batman's rogues but I do want to see more of what has happened between the current continuity and this setting in the future. I also feel like I should have been more excited about the appearance of the Justice League but I wasn't completely sold on them in the animated series either.

    The Verdict

The first arc is complete. We get some major resolutions over some of the problems that came up in the first two issues. We get teases at a couple big plot points that really got me excited. Terry takes a big step here and it could change where the character goes in later issues. This is definitely becoming more than just an adaptation of the animated series. Now if only we can get some more future glimpses at other Bat-characters.
