More Background to the Beginning of Batman's Crusade

I have loved this series and have been very pleased with the work Snyder has produced on this series. I wasn't a huge fan on his Detective run and didn't like what I read of his Swamp Thing series but he has certainly done a good job on this. This issue also has the amazing art work of Capullo which was sadly missing from the last issue.

This story starts with a party getting crashed by a gang called the Red Hood gang (nothing to do with the Jason Todd Red Hood). They find out one of their members is an imposter who in fact is Bruce Wayne (although they don't know this as he's in disguise). After escaping Bruce is at a new building he has near Crime Ally. Whilst testing a new boomerang gadget he is visited by Commissioner Gordon. Gordon discusses how it is illegal to be in league with a vigilante and and that he should tell him whatever he knows.

In the side story by James Tynion IV which I think steals the issue we see Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) talking with her father about Batman. In the same story we see Tim Drake (current Red Robin and third Robin) use detective skills before he becomes Robin, Jason Todd (current Red Hood and second Robin) stop a member of a gang he was in for going to far and Dick Grayson (Nightwing and first Robin) stop a mugger using his gymnast skills.

I really liked this issue and I liked the side story even more. It was nice to see all the younger members of the Bat family before they meat Batman and see how they had most of their skills prior to meeting Batman. I also liked how we saw a inexperienced Batman try to bluff his way past Gordon. I however don't know like how it appears the Red Hood gang will be seen in the near future as we already have a Red Hood and I feel this would be a bit confusing.

Final verdict. Brilliant series and one of the better Batman series' although I wasn't hugely fond of the Night of the Owls story. I would highly recommend it and am looking forward to the Death of a Family story.

@PsychoKnights: I knew all you said about Red Hood. Didn't pick up on the fact that it could be or is Joker but makes sense. I however was stating how it could be confusing if they had more from the Red Hood gang in the future (present). I agree with the origin of the Joker being open as well. That any or none of them could be true and no one but he would know.

    Good review.

I'm guessing based on your review that you did not pick up on the implication that the Red Hood gang was led by Joker. Sorry if you know this already, but it did not sound as if you were aware, and I thought you would be interested.

There have been several bad guys who have used the moniker Red Hood over the years, but the most famous was Joker which I believe was first told in "The Killing Joke," the plot line where Barbara Gordon was famously shot. In the Killing Joke, Joker's origin story is told, and he it turns out that he was a struggling stand-up comedian with a wife and child. He agreed to help some gangsters rip off his old employer at a Chemical warehouse. The gang dressed up in masks and they gave the Joker, whose former name is unknown, a Red Hood so that he would be labeled as the mastermind if they were caught. Before they could start the job, Joker got word that his wife had died in a house fire. He did not want to go through with it, but the other gangsters pressured him, and he relented.

The job went poorly. The police and Batman showed up almost immediately after the break-in. The police shot the gangsters and Batman inadvertently knocked Red Hood into a vat of chemicals. The Red Hood was washed out of the chemical system in some sort of water drainage system, and when he pulled off the Hood, he found that his face was bleached white, his hair had turned green, and his lips were ruby red. He started laughing, and he has been laughing ever since.

Of course, there have been many different tales of Joker's origin, and thus far, none have been made "official," but this is the most well-known. Personally, I picture all these stories circulating in the underworld of Gotham with nobody, even Batman, knowing which is Joker's real origin.

When Jason showed up, he used the guise of the Red Hood as a way of adopting the appearance and in many ways the methodology of his killer, Joker. In my opinion, it is Jason's way to show that he is neither hero nor villain. He is mixture of them both.

The goodThis is the first issue of Batman I got I've always been a batman fan but I didn't have the money to get but now I do and I am already really impressed. This story fleshes out what Bruce was doing when he fist came to Gotham and before he became Batman it's an interesting choice for a zero issue and it's really interesting. What makes this even better is the appearance of one of batman's old enemies (although I'm not saying who) but what makes the choice even better is the fact that they...

THE GOOD: Greg Capullo's art is fantastic. He manages to define Gotham City in every panel and it makes the book feel much darker. He also manages to make a ridiculous costume look really good. The facial expressions are also very strong in this issue revealing a much younger Bruce Wayne and James Gordon. The story is no doubt a strong part of this issue as well. We see the Joker before, the Joker and it really ends on a cliff hanger that may be answered in Death of the Family. Bruce Wayne also ...
