    Utter Garbage 5

This issue of Batgirl marks two things. One is the end of the arc with James Jr and the second one is the return of Gail Simone to the title after being fired and subsequently unfired from it.There are several ways to see this issue on so many angles it just fails completely. One of the most important facts here is that Gail Simone had pushed this story since issue #5 with the return of Barbara Sr and James Jr. However the last 2 issues were written by Ray Fawkes, as a result this entire arc does...

As good as it could have been 1

Pros: Gail Simone started a fascinating arc with a great villain, it had some bumpy parts but I think she did a nice job of ending it with tragedy and some mystery. We all know James Jr. wont stay gone, and that Barbara isn't a killer. However, the animosity between her father and her will be interesting to see how it is dealt with.Cons: Unfortunately with the two issues Gail was gone this story line stumbled, who knows where it was intended to go and for how long. I felt like it was wrapped...

    BatWatch Review: Batgirl #19 3

A Blade from the ShadowsAh, Batgirl. I'm not sure if I love you or hate you. I think it is a wee bit of both. For the past year, I've more or less liked Simone's (former writer of Birds of Prey and current writer of Batgirl and Vertigo's Time Warp) spin on Batgirl's stories, but Babs as a character seems like an unlikable chick with nothing particularly human to identify with except fear, sadness, self-doubt and self-pity. We did see Batgirl woman up at the end of Death of the Family, but I'm no...

    Bloodshed among sibling rivalry! 0

Right in the introduction readers witness a flash of James Gordon's unraveling as the two siblings watch a horror movie from years past. Young Barbara sits idly by in one corner over watching young James as he criticizes the sloppiness of the killer's handy work. Little did Barbara know that this memory is the beginning of James deviancy. Back to present day, Barbara returns to her roommate, Alysia. Barbara had left her behind oh so long ago during the issues of Death of the Family--where she ha...

Gail plays the Risk card 0

To be a comic book writer, you can't just write the same stories again and again. Fans will get tired of Captain America hitting Batroc the Leaper with his shield if you do it for 50 years straight: but if Batroc steals his shield and sells it to the North Koreans, that is a interesting twist. This story is in fact a way to point out that Batarangs are, in deed, sharp. A single loss of focus, and these tools of the king of though shall not kill, become lethal. And Alysia Yeoh was a boy.....er ...

The GoodDaniel Sampere's art is good. His style is very clear and it makes each panel very simple. The expressions are fairly strong and convey emotion like they should. Sampere also adds a lot of details into the background that really makes the world come alive. The use of shadow in some panels is well done and really shows how dark Gotham is, compared to the brightness of the apartment Babs shares with Alysia. This issue marks the return of Gail Simone, who was fired and unfired. She had to c...
