Six issues in we finally get Bat Lash's origin story
Bat Lash #6 opens with Bat Lash riding in East Texas in the rain when he comes across a funeral in progress. When he recognizes the preacher Bat Lash shoots him dead and is promptly arrested by the sheriff.
Sitting in a jail cell he explains to the sheriff who he is and why he killed the preacher - at this point the story flashes back to a young Batton Lash living on his family's farm.
I'm not sure why it took until the sixth issue to finally get around to telling Bat Lash's origin. However, it is a good standalone issue. There's none of the goofy theatrics we've seen in some of the past issues, and the art is mostly excellent. I say 'mostly' excellent because there are two pages right around the middle of the issue that are inexplicably poorer in quality than the rest. Either they were drawn and/or (more likely) inked by someone else, or the creative team prioritized them last and did a rush-job on them.
Other than those two pages, this is a very good issue, and also features a letters page - something missing from past issues.
However, the writing may have been on the wall for Bat Lash; the cover price was raised by 3¢ (not an insignificant jump in price back then), and the issue's letters page ends with a plea for people to buy their own copy instead of reading someone elses' because they need the money.
