History

Barret used to be a miner who hails from the small town of Corel. He has a wife named Myrna, and an adopted daughter named Marlene (the daughter of Dyne). he used to be an advocate of Shinra, and backed their plans to build a Mako reactor in his home town of Corel, as he saw it as the 'way forward' and a blessing for their small mining town, that if the destiny of Coal was to be dropped, Mako would replace it and the town would be left behind. His trust was ill placed however, and Shinra betrayed his trust and his town. His best friend at this time was a man named Dyne, and he believed Dyne lost his life when Shinra turned on them, and he lost his arm, which was replaced by a gatling gun which he intended to use to enact revenge on Shinra for the damage to his town and the loss of his friend Dyne. This desire for revenge was the foundation for his founding of Avalanche.

During the game

Barret was the one who, along with Tifa brought Cloud into Avalanche. Initially distrustful, he eventually develops a grudging respect for Cloud and his strength. During the course of the adventure he runs into Dyne once again, and is forced to battle him to the death for misunderstandings and deceitful reasons. Dynes last wish is for Barret to look after Marlene, which he promises to do.

Powers and abilities

Barret is a very strong and tough member of the team, though is not magically powerful. He is more of a hard hitter and can absorb a lot of damage even without using materia. He is a master gunner, and has turned his inner powers into a number of empowered gun attacks. He is a strong willed leader, and was able to found Avalanche with only his drive and charisma, though eventually relents that Cloud is a better leader than him.
