Plot Summary

He was a husband and a father. A brother and a friend. A cop and a dark knight. But he had all that taken away. And in return, he was given a suit of sorrows, a quest for redemption and a new name. He is Azrael, avenging angel for the Order of Purity and a new protector for Gotham City's troubled times. But who will protect the citizens from him? Guest-starring Robin, Nightwing, Talia and the League of Assassins, this miniseries runs alongside BATTLE FOR THE COWL and features the dramatic presence of a strangely familiar, troubled hero with two things on his mind: crazed vengeance for the wrongs he has suffered and salvation for the sins he continues to commit!

Gorgeous stuff (Or, how I started to love comics once again)

My first issue of anything that my Mom picked up for me one day at the local shop in our Charlotte, NC suburb was Batman #497, the "Breaking of the Bat" Knightfall issue. I remember the guy at the counter saying "Bruce Wayne is done, kid -- Azrael is Batman now." That was my introduction to the world of mainstream comics in the 90s. This issue and the Animated Series were my introduction to comics in the 90s, but for some reason I ended up a Marvel kid -- rabidly following Onslaught, the Spider-Man Clone Saga (even as a kid I knew they could never really replace Pete).

Obsessions with Basketball/Star Wars/Video Games/Music led me astray from comics for a good 10 years, up until early this year when I picked up the Watchmen trade, the ultimate gateway drug to bringing someone back 'into the scene'. And what's for sale the first Wednesday I go into the store? Turns out Bruce Wayne is out of the picture. Again. And coincidentally an Azrael is back in town. Just like that day in 1993 when Mom bought me #497. Frazer Irving's artwork here is superior stuff, beautiful paints that give Az the look and feel he deserves. Anyways, I'm happy to be once again obsessed with this industry of human happiness -- nice to have something other than music* to obsess about outside of school.

*Then, someone had to go and tell me about Phonogram. Worlds collided.

One of the best BFTC tie-ins

In this first chapter of Azrael: Death's Dark Knight, "Simple Sacrifices," the reader is introduced to a renegade Azrael who is murdering Gotham PD undercover officers, to the cabal known as the Order of Purity, to an enigmatic group of villains pursuing the Order's Suit of Sorrows, and to a former police officer, Michael Lane, steeped in the mysteries of Batman's death. With great cover art by Guillem March and even more impressive interior artwork by Frazer Irving, Fabian Nicieza's first issue of his new mini-series is the perfectly cryptic thriller to accompany the Battle for the Cowl crossover.

This is one of the few must-read tie-ins to the BFTC saga, and Azrael: DDK seems like it will reveal a few answers to some of those nagging questions surrounding Bruce Wayne's death.
