deranged_midget's Avenging Spider-Man #5 review

One of the best and most underrated issues I've ever read

With a spectacular focus on Captain America's goofy past attempt at comics and strong, emotional similarilty between him and Spider-man, Avenging Spiderman #5 stands out to be the single best solo issue I've read all year.

The Good:

What isn't good about this issue? The writing is absolutely top notch, the art is absolutely fantastic and the characters have never been written better. How can anyone not be absolutely blown away by this fantastic issue. it begins with a reading of one of Cap's old comics that he wrote and drew as a child of super-hero trying to support the war effort. Spider-man, along with Spider-woman, Hawkeye and Wolverine find this amusing seeing as Cap turned out to be the hero that the world needed during the dark war times.

Peter spends the majority of the issue trying to resonate with Cap seeing as they both used to be nerds in one or another. Cap tries his best to play it nice, spending his whole time focusing on the mission and trying to ignore Spidey's non-stop jabbering. This leads to Cap flat-out telling Peter to grow up, that he doesn't "play around" anymore and this emotionally strikes Peter hard.

The emotional aspect of this issue is beautifully played out and tugs a little at the heart strings as Cap and Peter try to resonate together over their past hobbies and what connects them. All the while, it is all spectacularly expressed through the absolutely stunning art of Leinil Francis Yu. This issue boasts easily the best art he's ever drawn, it's just that good.

The Bad:

Absolutely nothing. There are no slow points, every moment keeps you begging for more and you wish that each issue could be this good.

Verdict:

Whether you have been keeping up with Avenging Spiderman or not, this issue should not be missed out on by anyone who is a fan of Spider-man or Captain America. It's one of the best issues of this year so far and it's easily worth the extra dollar.

I definitely agree with this. This hasn't been my favorite issue of Avenging Spider-Man so far but I think it's very underrated as a series, but Amazing Spider-Man is so good as well that I think it's hard for people who read the main series to deviate. It reminds me of the time when Marvel wasn't all events and they just focused on making good single issues.  Spider-Man and Cap have always had an interesting dynamic. Love reading stories with those two.

@Vance Astro: I like how this issue focused on the smaller, life-related problems. It had it's fair share of action, but it worked fantastically when it worked around Peter's personality and his eagerness to find a relation with Cap.

I hope this won't be a short series. I'm excited to see more.

Issue #10 is the latest issue. I don't know if it has been released yet or if I simply didn't pick it up, but yea i'm pretty much up to date so far. I'm not really into this whole thing between him and Ms.Marvel but it's nice to see female heroes appearing as important allies to Spider-Man. The She-Hulk issue was my favorite so far.

@Vance Astro: Yeah, it seems as if they were trying to uproot a possible connection between Peter and Carol. My personal favourite remains to be #5

    A Proper Tribute 0

This issue of Avenging Spidey was very special. Back in December the comic book world lost a true giant when Joe Simon, creator of Captain America and many others, passed away. Marvel printed a small tribute to the man in some of it`s comics, especially Cap, but it was short and seemed like a sales pitch. This whole issue was written as tribute to him and it does an excellent job of it. We get to see Spidey finding common ground with Cap and trying to make buddy-buddy with him. It's a touching i...
