besides if he was there they wouldn't need another hero in the team lol
And he's not always a hero.
Just because the Avenger's tag line is "earth's mightiest heroes" doesn't mean that they are all the powerful heroes in Marvel. The Avengers are not the JLA.
As has been said, Surfer operates on a much bigger scale, he travels across the universe.
Surfer hates being stuck on earth, it was a curse Galactus once placed on him.
The Avengers teams form by means of "fate." The heroes gather together to fight a larger, common threat and decide that there is a specific purpose to all of them being present at the same time. Surfer has never showed up in one of those cases because he's been in space.

True, so true. Though JLA has GL, Superman, and Martian Manhunter. And a lot of the Avengers seem to be heroes that I for one have never heard of. SS is one of Marvel's biggest heroes. Besides, the Avengers might need someone who can travel in space.

They have plenty of people who can travel in space. The Avengers have a very rich history of members comeing and going.
As for why the SS is not part of them, well like the others said he travels and operates on a larger scale, and he has not always been on the good side (as far as earth is conserned).
I think that the Silver Surfer is a better loner than a team player. He once joined the Defenders. Yet, if you ever read the full run of the first series, he maybe showed-up 12 times tops. Let him remain a hero in space. Their are heroes who are better at doing the whole lone rider thing. Like a certain spider we all know.

Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does what ever a Spider can...
Cause he was with the defenders fighting the wild one lol
Actually, The Silver Surfer did become an Avenger in "What If The Avengers had fought Galactus?" so I think we could put him down as a member even though it was an alternate version of him. Oh and in Avengers Forever #11, one of the good alternate reality Avengers seen flying about was an alternate Silver Surfer.
Silver Surfer isn't an Avenger for the same reason Jean isn't an X-man anymore.Too damn powerful.
"Vance Astro said:They could totally get him out of that if they wanted to make him an Avenger but there is no point because then they'd have to depower him."Silver Surfer isn't an Avenger for the same reason Jean isn't an X-man anymore.Too damn powerful."Not to mention he is the servant of the greatest cosmic predator and all that....

"Do you really want him to be an Avenger? "
"He is not from Earth, although it wouldn't be a bad idea ti show up in the AvengersCrossovers wouldn't be bad, but if he was a member it would be boring.
"
He's not from Earth
They already have a brick like Thor
He could probably solo most of the Avengers enemies in one night
