Poll: Who is a better leader for the Avengers? (122 votes)

Ironman 28%
Thor 17%
Black Panther 25%
Hulk 5%
Black Widow & Hawkeye (sharing power) 5%
Nick Fury 17%
Doctor Strange 2%

I didn't add Cap cause it would be obvious.

My second choice as leader of the Avengers, if Cap is unavailable, would be Ms. Marvel.

Iron Man - Ehh, not exactly the inspirational-leadership type, also more of a futurist/thinker as opposed to a tactical leader.

Thor - Hnnn...might work, not too sure.

Black Panther - Too vested in Wakandan interests over the Avengers.

Hulk - Uh...not seeing this.

Black Widow/Hawkeye - West Coast Avengers notwithstanding, don't see Hawkeye or even Widow as the leader-type

Nick Fury - Conflict of interest with SHIELD, and he's a much better leader of that than the Avengers

Doctor Strange - Guy's always been more of a solo act, Bendis' run notwithstanding.

Why is Thor getting so much votes lol?

Captain America is always the best choice to lead the Avengers.

Iron Man is next.

Next good question I would say Iron Man or Captain Marvel, then Hawkeye.

I think the Avengers need a reliable and trusted telepath on their team, since I think the best teams don't have a clear cut leader, their have a combination of leaders that have good synergy and know when to work together or propose alternative courses of actions when that can be allowed. Its how I feel about the X-Men, no one leader, you have say Storm and Cyclops who have the most experience and familiarity with the role of leader, you have Emma synching up the team so thoughts are exchanged near instantly, and then you have a younger character learning the ropes as co leader and you have a back up leader ready to step up if the two main leaders are incapacitated.

Avengers wise I could see Ms Marvel and Monica Rambeau as good leaders. Iron Man I could see as a good co leader alongside either of those two, and Steve as well, but not a good leader just by himself. I view Thor as a great back up leader. All the Avengers respect him, some probably respect him more than Cap, Thor is considerate and has lead before, he has ample experience. Thor is probably underwritten really as far as his ability to lead, and that makes sense, because as far as team balance he wouldn't be good as the leader given his powerhouse role. He's also an immortal, makes sense he would chill in the background as a sign of respect for his mortal team mates who get glory for being a leader. I view Black Panther in a similar role. He could be a great back up leader and should be involved and thought of as a leader, but he has bigger priorities and he already is a leader of a nation. Bruce Banner I could see as a good leader, but the character is attached to the Hulk. His ability to lead may be compromised by that.

Widow and Hawkeye I think personality wise aren't good fits unless characters are molded to have a bit more depth, but this may detract from their characters at that same time. Their may also be too established and old to play a junior type role. Would love if Songbird or Justice were in Avengers and being primed to be Avengers leaders of the future.

Cap' is always my first pick, and Carol Danvers would be a really close second. I only voted for Iron Man because she wasn't an option, though he would be a close third.

Thor is actually more of a favorite for me than any of those, but I feel like he should feel like it isn't his place to lead Earth's mightiest heroes since he's not from Earth, and because he has so much respect for the mortal Avengers. It seems like he should only lead if none of the classic members are around, and would otherwise prefer to follow any of them. I feel similarly about the Vision, insofar as, despite being from Earth, he should recognize that he is unsuited to lead on humanity's behalf. In my mind, these two especially should always be around the Avengers, as the team is their connection to humanity, and they the immortal protectors of the team, it's classic and constant connection to the worlds of mythology and science fiction, respectively.

I do like that Hawkeye, Black Widow, Hank Pym, and the Wasp (who I can't help but notice is missing from this poll) all have lead the Avengers, mostly because the stories of any of them being leaders really helped develop their characters and show another side of the characters. It's why I like that the Avengers charter calls for leadership change on a regular basis, or that Cap' will nominate other characters for the role, because it gives characters other than Cap' or Iron Man a chance to show that they can be just as effective. Luke Cage is another great example of this. None of these characters are necessarily my all-time favorite as leaders, but both they and the team have benefited from the story development of them being in that role.

I'm actually really into Havok being the leader right now, for that same reason, because it puts both him and the team in a new context. That keeps the dynamic fresh, the characters developing, and the story moving foreword.

The correct answer is Hank Pym.

Black Widow? because she has lead the Avengers before, so I don't know what's up with that.. And Wasp has lead the team at least a few times, so I don't know why she wasn't an option. And Captain Marvel really should have lead by now..

And why is Dr.Strange (who's never lead the Avengers) up there, but not Hank Pym, Wasp, or Luke Cage?

Seriously, what is up with these weird poll options, _HYDRA_ ?

I agree with this. I would then say either Wasp, or Hawkeye for third.

I agree with this as well. Wasp is a very underrated character. In the few TPBs I have (Avengers: Under Siege and Avengers: Forever) she shows to be a very capable leader. As well as Hawkeye, from his West Coast Avengers days. I haven't read any comics with Widow or Pym as leaders (except Avengers A.I.. but it's to early to tell how good he'll be as a leader based solely on that book alone). Cage has proved to be a competent leader, if not a very capable leader as well.

@tg1982: Wasp and Pym kind of co-lead the Avengers West Coast sometime after Hawkeye left. It was actually during this period that I first started to really like Pym, who was reinventing himself and rebuilding his life after being kicked off of the main team.

Black Widow lead the east-coast team of Hercules, Vision, Black Knight, Crystal, and Sersi, around the early 90's, while Cap' and Thor weren't around.

I don't know but Carol can have my pole....

classy.

Wouldn't the obvious choice be WASP? That's of course barring Captain America not on the team.

Black Panther for sure. hes the only one with a broad enough vision to do what needs to be done

Cap is the only answer to this question he's lead so many different incarnations of the team. But I would have gone with Ms marvel/captain marvel as she lead the mighty avengers and did a darn good job at it but u didnt have her either so I went with Nick Fury.

Oh, you forgot Luke Cage. How silly.

#37 Posted by Alak (928 posts) - - Show Bio

Black Panther is capable of leading an entire nation. Therefore, leading a small band of heroes shouldn't be difficult for him.

#38 Posted by spider11211 (1143 posts) - - Show Bio

Ruling the nation is different, it requires some similar skills but it also requires other skills. I think he could do it, but I think others would be better.

Tony.

#40 Posted by Thurdazz1313 (49 posts) - - Show Bio

Thor has lead the successfully in the past, Tony & B. Panther would also work But both are heavily invested in their own projects

Hawkeye was a terrible leader, Black Widow also lead before had problems controlling more powerful members like Herc

Ms. marvel is a barely recovery alcoholic (Tony's her AA sponsor)

Fury no one trust fury, But they're all happy he's out there

None of this list is my preferred vice-leader for Avengers (Ms Marvel/Pym/Luke Cage/Spider Woman/Wasp all good examples).

Out of the list, I said Black Panther as he's the one with decent leadership skills (Shown during New Avengers). Civil War is proof of Stark's leadership skill.
